Is the EVO the new King?
Is the EVO the new King?
I've noticed an interesting trend, EVOs are all over the place. No not on the roads, but in the the automobile media. The EVO has been on front cover of just about every automobile magazine in the USA. The EVO has been rated the #1 Sport Compact Car of all time and had the leading role in a Hollywood Blockbuster Movie. A car that has absolutely no advertisement, has amassed a huge cult following, and the word "EVO" is quickly becoming an instantly reckonized household name. A friend of mine who is not that much into cars, pointed out an EVO to me the other day, amazing for a car that gets no advertisement. At the drag strip, the EVO has began that attain as much or more respect as more established drag racing icons like the RX-7 and Supra. On the streets, the EVO is given the same respect, and even V8 legends such as Camaro SS and Mustang Cobras have shown an surprising amount of respect to a 2.0L 4-Cylinder Turbo (EVO). The EVO has made a tremendous impact on the USA, and the question is- Is the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution the new Japanese Import Car King in the USA???

I think the cars that should be most affraid of the Skyline are those Domestic muscles(SVT Cobra, Z06 Vets, big displacement cars).
In any case I'll prob get one cuz by the time they get here I may have a mid-life crisis

About the Skyline... I think it has a chance to take the role that the Evo has now, but I think price will play a big role in how much of an impact it will make here. I doubt somewhat that tuners in the US will be able to mod those cars heavily right off the bat since it is going to be a new motor. We'll see though, I guess alot of questions are still up in the air since 07 is still a good ways off.

Of the newer generation cars, I guess I would give the Evo the crown. But, in the overall scope of things, I still rank the Supra TT as "The King" of the turbo world. I agree that the Evo is quickly becoming a very prominent figure, and easy to recognize. But, to me the Supra TT is still king. I mean, some of them have made over 700hp on the stock bottom end. And, it seems like every time you open a magazine, there is another one with 1000hp. And, just like the Evo in 2F2F, the orange Supra in FnF is arguably one of the most famous cars from a movie, next to Eleanor from Gone in 60. Add all this to the fact that the Supra isn't made anymore, and was pretty rare when it was out, and you have a very exclusive and potent machine. I like the Evo, and it is surely gaining steam in America as a sweet machine. But to me, its still the JZA80 Supra TT.

i would agree it is, but the problem, especially in the last few years, is that the KING is never the king for long. iw as just reading about the old king. the first gen GTI. and how VW killed it. but are trying to fight an uphill battle by bringing it back. if MITSU would treat the owners, and supporters a little bit better in the warranty department, they could last evn longer. IMHO it is worth it to them. how many people on this board alone drive a lancer just casue it is kind of similar to the superior EVO. MITSU has no one to thank for that other than the owners, and tuners, they made the car popular. NOT the magazines. they simply write about what is cool, for their readers.
id like to see a supra win car and driver super car shootouts where handling is important. sure supras can make 1million hp but it cant handle like an evo. the fastest time attack car ever on tsubuka circuit was the evo 8. some cars can be good at some things but not as good at others. its almost impossible to find a car that can dominate every field. the evo is a monster track car a great drag car a great backroads car and a superb daily driver that seats 5 and is only 30k. thats a combo nothing can match.
i heard the new supra would be around 55k, which with that price the evo will still be king long as they dont screw up the 9s that bad, there is always alot of hype around new cars coming like the skyline but look at the rx8 i anticipated that cars arrival and it was probably the biggest upset ive seen in a generation difference in cars
When I said that the Supra TT was "The King", I didn't mean that it was the best all around performer. Sure, if you take a tuned Evo and a tuned Supra to a road course, the Evo will probably beat it fairly easy. But, take them both to the drag strip, and the Supra will probably win. To me, its not just about the numbers they produce, be it track times or horse power ratings. I'm talking just simply about the car that commands the most attention. If all I wanted was a car that ran #'s, I'd keep my Talon. It almost runs 10's, I auto-x it frequently with good success, it looks great, and its a fairly decent daily car ( > 10mpg
).
But, when I think of a car that frequently makes people go "WOW", its the Supra TT. Its got a very good shape that still looks good now, even 12 years old. They can make huge power, which is always fun. Even as big as they are, they can be made to handle very well. And, they have a very nice interior, which like the body, still has a good feel even now. All those things together make for a fantastic car. Thats why it's "The King" in my book.
