Test Drove a 2005 GTO
I like the look of the orange colored one, that looks pretty aggressive! There are already a few turbo kits on the market for them and some pretty mean twin turbo setups that are being developed. I know for a fact that there is atleast one 2004 GTO that has already gone 10's with the turbo kit

I have a 03 Evo and a 2005 GTO, I prefer the GTO as a daily driver, much more solid feel on the road, more comfortable, effortless power. I get 19 plus mpg with spirited driving on the GTO. The handling is more than adequate. The GTO is faster than a stock Evo in my opinion, but not as fast as my modded EVO.
The car does not gain you any unwanted attention from the cops, the Evo draws unwanted attention like crazy. If you you want a car that says LOOK AT ME, the Evo is your car. This is the golden age of high performance, there are a lot of nice, fast cars out there, the Evo is not the ONLY one.

i have a 04 gto and, it is not the fastest car or the best handling, but for what it is, it handles pretty well. you have to know how to drive it. it will seem like it is going to lose grip but you keep pushing it and it just takes it.
i love it, if you think about it, what american car handles, like a evo???? none.
american cars were not built on that, going fast in a strait line has always been the plan. but i think a pair of sway bars and a set of drop springs this thing would handle pretty well for what it is.
my nitrous and longtubes will be going on very soon. stock rwhp 290ish with the mods i have goin on, nitrous, longtubes, catback and intake. i should have 440rwhp and 550rwtq.
not bad for about 2k worth of mods

I too own an 04 GTO. Didn't have 400hp when I got it though. It dyno'd 292whp stock. It's got aroudn 447whp now. The handling is ok for 80% of the people who drive it. However, those who really push their car in the cornering department will be a bit dissapointed. Here is a video I actually did of my Head/Cam setup. It's a tough car to drive at the track with the independent rear susupension. I just can't hook up no matter what I do.

As far as the Evo handling better than the Vette (C5/C6 or Z06)...I would disagree. The Evo is easier to drive hard but if you put a competent driver in the Vette, it should come out on top.

this is what i dont understand.??? the gto is not supposed to look really agressive. that is what everyone wants out of it. but the original was just a ordinary car with a big motor.
y cant the new one be just the same> why does everyone want this car to be something its not.??? its a sleeper. just leave it that way.
does anyone get what i am trying to say??? not trying to be a dick, but if you dont like it dont buy one.
its a great car, and many people have traded in their vettes and f-bodies just so they could have a gto
i'm seriously considering the GTO now... i could get a 06 for an amazing price.. the only 2 things that i don't like about it is the IRS and 2 pc driveshaft... not that it's a problem to swap out for a ws6 or ss, but i just don't like the idea of upgrading your car by putting old parts on it... anyone else feel this way?

you will be fine, unless you really start upgrading in the power department.
i had a sts turbo on my gto, but no longer. i drove my gto hard then and i still do as it is now almost stock, and i have no prob. y dont you like irs?? corvettes come with irs and no one ever complains about it??
I drove a 2004 GTO a little while back (LS1/C5 Corvette engine) and my impressions of it were pretty similar to SpecVSpeed's. I only drove it around town and didn't carve up any parking lots with it, so I'm not going to comment on its absolute handling, just its feel.
Power/speed - 350 hp LS1 version or no, it's still a pretty damn fast car to me and the torque is awesome.
Driving controls (steering/shifter/clutch) - The shifter was really sloppy compared to my car's of course, but it didn't feel particularly bad. It didn't seem any worse than that of, say, an E46 3 series I drove a while back. The clutch had longer takeups than mine but again didn't feel particularly bad, just not particularly good. I don't remember much about the steering, so I guess it didn't make a huge impression either way.
General driving impressions - It felt like a big, heavy car. I also felt very enclosed inside it, and general visibility wasn't good. Then again I'm using to small sedans, so of course a big, heavy coupe generally feels a little awkward to me.
Interior - It's no luxury car, but the interior didn't feel cheap either and it was well put together. The seats were comfortable, though I could've done without the red leather on the car I drove. The back seat was suprisingly roomy. Average-sized folks would probably be pretty comfortable for being in the back seat of a coupe so long as they're not claustrophobic.
Exterior - Yes, it's plain looking. I'm okay with that, I don't need every cop pointing his radar gun at me
The hoodscopes are ugly but also optional, and without them I think the car looks fine. The Holden version's front looks a little better IMO - I like their grill more than Pontiac's.
Overall I liked the car for what it is. It's a low-key coupe with a usable back and tons of power for the price, especially after discounts and haggling. I haven't driven a new Mustang yet, only ridden in one, but if I were looking for a RWD v8 coupe I'd probably rather spend the extra money for a GTO than get a Mustang GT, if only for the usable back seat. Even though I live in California now I'll still never get such a car as my only car though. And if I ever get a second car I'd take a Corvette, new or used, over either.
