Think about Ducati, any opinions?

Hey guys I think I've been bitten by the bike bug and I'm looking at all the options but the Ducati Monster always sticks in my mind. The bike is definitely one of the least powerful but, I haven't owned a bike before so what do I know, right?

Lately some friends have been trying to talk me into various 600cc sportbikes but I don't know, I just have a very bad feeling that I'm going to kill myself

Oh yeah, I've already taken an MSF course...it's definitely worth the money...

Duc Monsters are great bikes to start on and they're sexy as hell and still perform very well. A great way to separate yourself from the UJSB (Ubiquitous Japanese Sports Bikes). The Monster "dark" is flat black and bad a$$......I'd rock one. Keep in mind though that your average Duc requires a bit more TLC and maintenance than a Japanese bike.....the price you pay for having an Italian bike. Roll up on a Duc or one of the lookalike 600 supersports and see which one gets the most eyeballs

Yea if you never own a bike before... don't try 600cc to start with cause you will ending up hurt yourself.
Ducati Monster is great but still I don't think it's a good bike to start off with.
Like loj68 say above, Italian bikes sounds nice but maintance is going to drain your pocket a lot more than Japanese bike. if you just want to get the feel of a bike or save gas (with crazy gas prices these days) look for something thats cheap.

MSF stands for Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Its basically a course for people who want to learn how to ride bikes. Its very simple and basic but extremely helpful because you get a lot of seat time. Plus it exempts you from taking the riding portion of the license test. Not to mention a nice insurance discount.

Alternatively, I was looking at the Suzuki SV650, but its only slightly cheaper and very common. What bike would you recommend?

Anyone on here that owns a monster 620? impressions?

Get the Monster S4R. This is the top of the line Monster with the 996 superbike engine. Trust me, this bike will have plenty of power. Since it is a naked style sportbike it also has a comfortable, more upright riding position while providing awesome handling. This is a bike you can ride all day and still take to the track. And, that Ducati V-Twin sound is unbeatable. I think this bike is around $9-10k new.

How much for the S2R? That's the aircooled 800cc, right?

the S2R is $7999 brand new from the dealer.

the reason i like the S2R better than the 620 is the power ofcourse...but mostly because the S2R model comes with a single swingarm which IMO looks awesome and the dual exaust on one side rather than one pipe on each side of the rear wheel....just like in the picture above.

I just picked up an 06 M620. It is my first "real" bike, I had only ridden dirt bikes as a kid. I looked long and hard at the SV650S. That's a great bike for the $$$ but the duc just fit me much better and the insurance was about half the SV! If you are worried about power, go for S2R, It's more comperable to the SV in power. The 620 has plenty of power for me and it handles great. And that exhaust sound!!! Bella!!
