2006 STI Test Drive Impression

Went to a local dealership and test drove the 06 WRX STI. Previously i drove also the WRX TR (Tuner Ready) and just wanted to do some comparison to the EVO.

How come when i go throgh the gears on both subarus right after the up shifts there is a delay of power surge. It doesn't mater how fast you shift, you can feel this hesitation. I never felt this in the EVO or other cars. Is this just a subaru issue, i felt the power of STI not really impressive.

Does anyone know or is there any reasons for this hesitation on the STI when up shifting???

I don't know about that - the STI I test drove seemed strong and responsive, but when I pushed it a little on an on-ramp, felt like it was going to run off the road...

EVO handles much better, imo....

Are you talking about lack of power at high rpm's? Because if so, the stock turbocharger pretty much dies off right around 5500rpms and falls flat on its face.

The STI is drive by wire. Which means there isn't a throttle cable. How you moderate the pedal will affect the way the power comes on. I noticed that if you full throttle it, the torque is unreal, and pulls like a freight train. Part throttle acceleration, the car behaves in a different manner. The STI is setup from the factory to run in gravel conditions, while the Evo is tramac.

The STi wasn't that bad, it's more of a family car I think then the Evo. I test drove both as well and decided to go with the evo just because of how hard the suspension is and there are no problems with shifting into 2nd.

If I had kids and planned on being a weekend warrior, I'd get the STi. But since I plan on being an every day NJ Parkway warrier, the evo is the way to go.

I test drove an 06' STi before I bought my EVO. Power wise, it felt just about the same as the evo to me

That hesitation while up shifting could be a boost leak.

I found the STI much easier to launch, and the torque comes on much lower then the EVO.

I doubt an 06 sti has a boost leak. My guess would because of the twin scroll turbo we have gives us so much more response and it always keeps the boost ready for another gear.

Hesitation is because of the drive-by-wire system like Fierysun explained. And they do seem easy to launch.

I just test drove an 04 STi last night because I was trying to compare it to the Evo. I was disappointed, Evo all the way. The Sti was a lot sloppier than the Evo I tested and seemed to have less tq feel to it. The Sti just seemed doggy and not very fun.

But about the drive-by-wire system... no AEM EMS pnp for them! (Haha, always a must have for me)

Ok, when you drive a car that is not Drive by Wire System , you must alwas keep your foot on the gas, don't let go and the problem will be eliminated. Just found out that from an experienced driver.

Because the throttle is driven by wire not cable.
