00' Galant VR-4 Conversion
00' Galant VR-4 Conversion
Okay, just wondering, is it possible to take an 00' Galant ES (2.4 liter 4 cyl) and convert it into a VR-4? My dad is considering buying a Camry so he might junk the Galant but I think it'll be good for mods. It has 101k miles on it and engine wise I'd say the engine is 7/10. My plans are to repaint it, do an engine swap with a VR-4 engine from ebay, and somehow convert it to AWD. Now a few questions..
1) Did the latest or last VR-4 come with a 4g63? If so, shoudl I buy one from ebay or just do a swap with an Evo?
2) Is it hard work to convert the tranny into AWD? How much woudl it cost? Would it be easier to take a tranny froma junked Evo?
3) I don't really care about the body right now, but how much do you guys think this will cost overall if I dont buy cosmetics such as gauges, head/tail lights + grill?

1) Yes, I believe they did which is why they're so popular. Either one will cost alot of money.
2) What do you think? Getting a transmission replaced is expensive. Finding a transmission from a different car and having it mounted into your car that wasn't meant to have it would be difficult and costly. You would have to go around to different shops and see how much they would charge... there's no set charge on the internet that privately owned shops abide by.
3) Look on the web for yourself. This forum is great for no so obvious questions. The easy ones you need to lookup yourself.
Anything is possible, almost everything is relatively expensive.

1) No, it came with a 6A13TT 2.5L Twin Turbo V6, a 5 speed manual or a 5 speed auto, it had ACD and AYC.
2) You would not be converting the tranny to AWD, you would get an AWD drivetrain from a donor car and have everythign transplanted. Impossible? No....
3) More than it's worth... but some people see individuality worth it's weight in gold. It will cost you a lot of money for this conversion and you will have a hell of a time sourcingreplacement parts when you break it, and you will break it.

^^ Mcuh appreciated Super Hatch! I don't really care fi I put mor ethan what the car's worth into it, because I'm guessing about 85 % will be taken out and replaced with new parts. THe only things that will be kept are the body and parts such as the dash and doors..

I wouldn't mind one but the time and money it will take for you to pull this off would not be worth it at all. Find yourself a 91-92 vr4 and restore and mod that. Most of the vr4's I have found are sadly to fubar to do anything without spending too much $$$.
1) If you have to ask how to do all this, you must have no idea what goes into swapping an engine, electrical components, transmissions, and awd.
2) Get ready to take it to a shop to have them do it right if they know what they are doing, and get ready to pay them A LOT of money.
3) It would be more cost effective to buy a used evo or a nicely modded vr4.. lol.

Can't you take the drivetrain out of the older Galant VR-4's (1991-ish) and swap it in? I THINK they used 4g63's... I remember seeing your year's Galant while I was in Hong Kong and they had a VR-4 trim... had a big FMIC... maybe it was just swapped with a FWD 4g63 or they really DO have a VR-4 trim that never came to the US... I dunno. If you can make it work, it'd definately be worth it, IMO.
Here is a link to the VR-4 that I want it to be:

The VR-4 you want is as superhatch listed. I think you can actually buy that shape Galant in the states? If so, it could be done, but it'll cost you. And yes, the engine's an east-west mounted 6A13TT. It's a 2.5 V6 twin turbo.
Me and my brother test drove a manual '98 VR-4 a couple of years ago. The turbos provided near instant boost response but didn't have much to offer above 5500 rpm or so. Apparently same driveline as Evo V-VI. Also has AYC and ACD. It's also available as a station wagon called the Legnum VR-4. They're cool cars and quite cheap to buy now.

i have a 01 galant with a 03 evo motor and it runs off the stock ecu. i've spent countless hours deciding on which way to go and my conclusion was the 4g63t swap was the way to go and let me tell you why:
1)forget about the awd part. seriously, for that money, work on importing one. im running my swap with a 02 eclipse 5 speed tranny (w/ a quaife LSD) and it bolts right up. motor mounts and all.
2) ok, so you stay fwd right? now you need a fwd tranny from a FTO (good luck finding one) and have it imported here. that will bolt up to the 6a13. you can keep your fingers crossed that the mounts are the same on the tranny
3)the wiring. actually very doable i did my entire harness myself even the cel light works and everything. you would need the entire harness plus ecu.
4) ok, its working, and then something breaks...guess what? can you say DOWN TIME and $$$? again, hopefully you know somebody overseas to get you the parts
dont get me wrong, it would be a real cool project and if somebody really wants to do it and is close i would love to help out but from a cost effective point of view the 4g63 is the way to go. if something breaks hell i just go buy parts at the dealer.
besides, it's kinda cool to have a 4g63 powered 01 galant like the original 91 galant did.
