I'd also take an SRT4 over a Cobalt.

Except for the monstorous torque-steer you get from the SRT-4, I would have to recommend that over the Cobalt. Yes, you get torque-steer on any FWD car with that kind of power, but the SRT-4 offers more bang for the buck. Besides, you can get Mopar stage performance kits that don't void the warranty. Anyone who doesn't respect the SRT-4 simply doesn't know its capabilities too well.

If I had to decide, I would take the SRT-4 over the Cobalt.

Both are basically the same car. However, I like to call this the Saturn Ion Don't-Redline after a guy I knew blew his engine to pieces at the strip. He was shifting from 3rd to what he thought was 4th (actually hit 2nd) and blew the whole motor apart.

I'm sure this could happen to a lot of cars, but I wouldn't trust that GM engine anymore.

I heard it's slow from several ppl it's only good as a track car (Cobalt Time Attack Version). My friend has a base LT and he drove the SS and was highly disappointed. Like everyone else said SRT-4 all the way.

Well there is a kid running around in a yellow SS in Hagerstown MD with a "stage 2" upgrade (whatever that includes) and hangs right with two EVO guys I am friends with making around 315whp. So you can get some power out of them. I was at the track on Friday and there were several SRT-4s running mid 12s consistently. Also, a friend of mine has an SRT-4 and races for SBR and hit 10s this fall. So I guess it depends on what you want. I personally would go SRT-4 but if you want a 2 door and less power then the Cobalt is a good choice too. If your brother is keeping the car stock I would go Cobalt just because they are a tad sexier IMO.

The 2.0 ecotech in that car is alot stronger than people give it credit for. Its the same engine in the Soltice GXP/Sky Redline, except it uses a turbo instead of a supercharger in those applications. The ecotech can take alot of crap, and GM even released a book on how to build one up to 1000hp. You don't see Mitsu pulling that do you?

No, but how many 1000 hp Cobalts do you see on the street? Sure, the pro drag cars may make close to 1000 hp, but you're not going to find it anywhere else. While 1000 hp Evos aren't commonplace, there are some out there that are probably daily driven making around 600 whp, which is probably around 700-750 hp at the crank.

Other than that, yes, I'd agree that the Ecotec is a well-built motor. They were designed to hold a lot of hp. In fact, I believe GM built an 800 hp block on a stock bottom end, if I recall correctly.

i post alot on cobaltss.net(tons of information regarding the car) and the ecotech engine is really a well driven car and responds well to mods

basically if ur friend gets one hes gonna wanna get the stage 2 upgrade for the ss s/c model which will probably give him around 230-240 on the right dyno and if he wants he can get intake, exhaust and maybe the ingalls torque dampener

but they are definitely good cars but the SRT-4 will beat them, just a matter of preference really

i would rather get a cobalt ss jsut because they look a tone better than an srt4 (in my opinon) and that aren't that slow. i also don't expect it to be as fast as my evo. but if you put money in it, it will haul some butt. i personally wished it was turbo'ed and not ss. but oh well.
