At this point you can buy a 4th gen LS1 Z28 for ~$7,000. Add heads/cam/headers/swaybars/shocks and you have a fast project car for under $11k.

Yep. Stay away from 1998s and 1999s because they had oil starvation problems and thinner cylinder walls than the 2000-2002s. I would recommend either a 2001 or 2002 model because they also had LS6 intakes.

Yea me personally i've choosen to do a RB26DETT swap over the summer. after christmas im getting a S14 Se and dropin that sucker in there. all i really gotta do is make a custom Downpipe because the twin turbo downpipe doesnt clear the steering shaft. that and also get a intercooler wit custom pipes. Mckinneymotorsports.com has the mounts u need. also another thing is the driveshaft u gotta get a new custom one.

The oil starvation issue is mainly for road racers that take some really high sustained G's for a long period of time. Even for them it's not a problem because you can just use an extra quart of oil or buy an oil accumulator for $100.

The blocks are different on '98 models, but it's not anything important. A '98 block will tolerate about a .005-in. overbore where as the 99+ block had revised sleeves which made a .015-.020 overbore possible.

About 15% of '01 models and 20% of '02 models got the LS6 block -- but again, nothing major and not worth paying extra for. About the only advantage to getting a '01-'02 is the Z06 clutch and LS6 intake. The '98-'00 had a more aggressive cam so the HP difference is only around 10hp.

I'd do a third gen RX7....exceptionally beautiful, exceptional handling and very, very light. It's easy to get them down around 2500lbs. with full interior. If you're not into the rotary thing, just swap in a V-8. Because the car is so light, tons of crazy hp isn't needed. A 400rwhp motor with proper suspension setup would have you in the 10's.
