STi dyno results

Hi guys,

We just spent the dyno dyno testing/tuning a bunch of interesting cars today. Among them were a Lambo Diablo VT roadster, Ferrari 360 Modena, 500+ cubin inch 427 Cobra, a couple of EVOs and, of course, a brand new STi

For the STi, the at-the-wheel results (on our Dyno Dynamics Dyno, of course):

216-223 HP @ 5800 RPM
215-222 Ft-lbs @ 4200 RPM

Pictures, dyno graphs and more details to follow....

One of the stock EVOs we dyno'd today made 190-193 wheel hp. That's the strongest totally stock EVO we've ever had on our dyno. The Stage Zero EVO made 212-213 wheel hp, FWIW.

Cheers,
Shiv

That seems right to me. A 93 octance EVO will dyno 190 on your dyno correct? 190 + 30 is 220 so that equals the crank hp difference between the two. I'm assuming you dyno'd the STI on 91 octane so does the STI fair as well as the EVO by putting 93 octane it it?

Hmm . . . imagine that. Exactly 30HP. If these differences are consistent with other dynos, both cars are putting out their claims. Thanks for the info Shiv.

Unfortunately, wheel HP is not the same as Engine HP. The results would suggest a larger Engine HP differential between the two cars (ignoring any possible differences in driveline losses-- which is likely considering the difference in engine layout).

Just something to chew on, I guess.

Cheers,
shiv

Every dyno thye pull is low......was there ever an explination for this? Damn it, there needs to be a SAE proceedure for dynoing AWD vehicles......

They use a Dyno Dynamics one, instead of the Dynojet. Those tend to read lower than other dynos, and it's the most commonly used dyno in Australia.

Someone on the Subie boards commented that from these numbers either the STi is putting out ~10hp more or the Evo ~10hp less than claimed...

It seems like the difference is pretty reasonable given what we've seen regarding power and drag performance in the mags so far...

This is all foreplay - - the real battle will be when we start with cracking 400 wheel hp with bigger turbos - - we all know the evo can go that far with ease (just needs stronger rods bolts) - - - the unknown issue is how far the US STI can go - what is its tuner capacity ? Thats what will be really interetsing to see - - - we all know they can make 300 - 350 wheel hp with simple mods - - whow me one making 412 wheel HP on street gas and as a daily driver then we will know they are has hard as the jdm sti

Time will tell

Well I believe the STI has a warmend over 2.5 RS motor, but I believe the limited factor for the STI is the limiting factor for all Subies, the tranny. Subarus have notoriously weak transmissions....

Not really, there's some extremely modded STis out there with the stock 6spd tranny so it should be fine, but then again most people in other parts of the world aren't that into drag racing so who knows...

Wish I could have stayed there all day to watch you do those runs with the other cars Shiv. I did see an STi today, looks great. I don't like the scoop, but i think it will grow on me, just like the grill.

Well Shiv, does that mean I don't need Stage 0....

Thanks again for letting us use your facility. Josh seemed upset that his Diablo wasn't pulling what it should, but it just confirmed his impression that the latest round of mods actually decreased the power of the car. And I drove the 360 home - I rather like that car, although I wish it had the direct steering of the EVO. You didn't thrash it when you took Ken out for a ride, did you?

Who cares unless you are looking for a dyno that will give you the highest reading for bragging rights? And that will only last until someone puts an STi on that same machine.

You have what matters here, both cars on the same dyno so you can compare the differences . Basically a 20-30 HP difference depending on the individual car.
