Hatchbacks are gaining popularity in a lot of markets in the US. They're very popular in the Seattle area (as are wagons).

Maybe, but the largest car market in the world is the US. A lot of new Japanese cars are designed in America simply because they know they need to please us because thats where their bread is buttered.
