And people shouldn't expect to be be pampered when they pay $43,000 for a GT500 instead of $100,000 for a M6.

Now here is the million dollar question: What other factory built car can you buy for $43k that has 500hp and runs as fast as a M6 on the road course? None.

They just debuted the Shelby Cobra GT500KR at the NY Auto show, 540 hp with some diff ignition timing as well as some other stuff and a handful of transmission and suspension goodies that I think will make it alot faster than just simply adding another 40hp. Hopefully they'll keep the price down and ford will have a real nice Stang.

Since when are gt500's going for $43,000??

You need to add about $25,000 dealer markup to that figure.

yep.....people are willing to pay the price which is inconcievable to me 60K for a stang. Shelbys are startign to drop in price though.

The cars are proving to be more stout than anyone thought. KB 2.8H blower, tune, exhuast, and a little fuel and people are seeing 700whp on pump!!!!!! For those not into mustang terminology that's about 8k in hard earned $$$$

Since when do you fault a car for being popular? Ford Motor Company doesn't get any of that markup.

The GT500 was built for a $41,675 price point and that is how it should be judged. As of now, Ford is the only automaker making a 500hp car for a low-40's MSRP. Therefore, the car gets my respect.

Thats what Ford wants for it but go to a dealer and the price is almost double here in Cali. To me its not worth it. Plus that car was meant to be fast in a straight line. To me its just GT with a big *** motor and Shelby badging. I would rather buy the Roush

Like I said, markup is beside the point when the GT500 is judged. Everything about the car was built for a $41k price point.

The car isn't JUST fast in a straight line either.

See Car and Driver's lightning lap on a road course:

Ford GT, 3:00.7
Chevrolet Corvette Z06, 3:01.1
Dodge Viper SRT-10 Coupe, 3:01.6
Lotus Elise (US spec), 3:09.2
Chevrolet Corvette C6, 3:09.3
Porsche Cayman S, 3:09.5
BMW M6, 3:10.0
Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, 3:11.0
Nissan 350Z Track, 3:12.5
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX MR, 3:13.5
Dodge Charger SRT-8, 3:18.2
Mazda RX-8, 3:19.0
Chevrolet Cobalt SS, 3:20.6
Ford Mustang GT, 3:20.9
Volkswagen GTI, 3:25.1
Honda Civic Si, 3:26.5
Mazda MX-5, 3:29.3
If the GT500 didn't have ignition problems in that test, it would've been faster than a M6. Now are you going to say the M6 was "meant to be fast in a straight line"? The GT500 is just fast.....road course or drag.

You can buy a $48k C6 Z51 that's faster, lighter, looks better (IMO), and has a better interior....

Yeah, you can, but it won't be a Shelby GT500. Many people don't base their buying decision solely on bang-for-the-buck performance.

Yes the car weighs almost 4000lbs, but who cares. It's still fast. I haven't been on this board long, but I can tell that a lot, not all, of people are only concerned with 1/4 mile times anyway. So what does it matter if it doesn't handle well, no mustang does (believe me I know).

As for the markup, its the exact same thing when the evo came out. Anyone that was shopping for an evo in 2003 saw the 10k markups at the local dealerships. Hell, car and driver had to buy their test car with a markup. So i don't think its fair to judge a car by its markup. thats like people with SRTs in 2003 asking if a 38k evo is worth it. Just wait a bit, let the newness wear off, and the market will settle.

bloated pig, with no handling prowess...unless you consider burning donuts handling

at this price point there are way better things to buy.

yeah.. they are basing their decision on "it will be a collectible!" there is clearly no other reason to pay that a 25K markup for an inferior car..and when I mean ineferior.. people are paying 70K for this car that has the exact same tail light as the cheapo 20K car.. it looks downright like a cheap economoy car. Everything on it looks pretty cheap other then the engine. Its great and all, but and clearly if you have money to waist you dont car about the markup.. but...

I cant wait to see the markup on the corvette SS later this year.

Im looking forward to the challenger.. and then there will also be the BOSS mustang, which will be in more of a road course trim.. cant wait for that!

I bet the Camaro will also bring markup for a while.....just like the Mustang GT did.

You can't really put a price tag on having what you want - especially when you have a lot of money to spend. The GT500 is a car that speaks to people's soul!

The GT500 isnt that bad of a price when you look at what you're getting though. I dont think Id pay 60k, but then again the local ford dealership had in the parnelli jones edition saleen with a 302 in it, and for that, orange paint and window luevres (spelling?) they were asking 63k. I think the GT500 is prob a good deal around 45-50.
