Caterham motor discussion
Or better yet the flat 4 from an STi
The problem is there is just not that much room, height or width wise, and this really limits engine choices.
If you stay with the standard choices you will get much better support as much of the problems that you would normally encounter have already been resolved or at least been seen before.
The Caterham close ratio 6 speed box is also an absolute peach

I guess it depends on what your desires are for a project car. It'd be fun (but terribly expensive) to develop a long inline engine (maybe a 3 liter I8) for the car. There's plenty of length but not much width or height. At the same time, the Ford Zetec motor provides decent power and you'll have support for a "plug and play" application from Caterham USA.
Has anyone dropped in a SR20? DE's can be had for dirt cheap, and DET's don't cost too much... throw as much boost as you want at either motor
I would guess that the SR20 is lighter than the 4G63 (aluminum vs. cast iron blocks) and is readily available in RWD configurations.
Too bad the F20 doesn't seem to fit...
