3000gt Turbo ?'s
ok, so my buddy has a '99 3000gt non vr4 and hes lookin to turbo it this summer. I dont know anything about the car really, so was wondering if he should look for set up out of a vr4, or if he should piece one together like guys do on here with 16G's on lancers. If he went that rout whats a good sized turbo?
well all I know about the vr4's is that they are awd, twin tubro, twin intercooled...IM sure it will be much easier to get a single turbo fmic set up...instead of the stock set up...Im sure theres gotta be some 3000gt forum out there to get some more info...

yea i know the vr4's are awd and twin charged, so i duno if you can actualy use the same set up on a base 3000gt, but do you think a t3 or t4 would be to big?
Stock VR4 turbo is a 12 or 13b . . . can't remember exactly.
I don't know if it can be a single turbo setup. If you get a 2 16g, the cost will be high! 2 T3/T4 setup, it's going to be crazy cost.

Does he have the SOHC or DOHC. It makes a big difference because the SOHC has 160 BHP while the DOHC has 222 BHP. I dont suggest turbos from a VR4 setup because they tend to go south really quickly and the newest setup is already 8 years old. If he does have the SOHC dont even bother and get another car. The DOHC at least has something good to start with. Also has he upgraded his transmission yet? 3000 GTs are notoriously for blowing trannies on the 5 or 6 speed.
If hes really looking to do that he might just want to make it a long term project and see if he can convert the entire car to a VR-4. It is possible and ive seen it done. Its just quite time consuming, but if hes looking to do a TT kit on his motor he may just want to research buying an entire VR-4 drivetrain.

Easiest (read as "only viable") way to turbo an NA 3000GT is to go with the VR4 stock setup.
Buy the exhaust manifolds, turbos, wiring harness, ecu, piping, intake, oil lines, coolant lines, intercoolers, injectors, fuel pump and the front motor mount bracket from a VR4. **forgot to add the oil housing, you will need that as well** **douible edit - also forgot the exhaust - that will be needed as well**
Without internal motor work or just plain swapping to the VR4 engine you will only want to run stock VR4 boost pressure.
A VR4 engine will swap right into the NA and onto the tranny.
Thats it.
My previous car was a 98 3000GT SL and I did extensive research into turboing it. The way above is the only viable option..... and still isn't worth it.
I just ended up selling the 3000GT and buying an Evo.

^^^I agree with you on everything except the last sentence. The 6 speeds Getrags are very strong, the 5 speed are butter. My friend Trevor just put down 626whp/601lbtq last week on his unmolested 6 speed Stealth tranny, he runs 10.3@138 and never had any issues with his tranny at all.

I wonder if people are familiar with the words common sense. Trying to make the 3000 GT N/A a turbo car is perhaps costlier than buying the TT AWD .
You would have to buy turbo, headers,FMIC,injectors,stronger clutch, custom downpipe, some sort of ECU programing plus the tuning. Just for your information, a cheap IC for a Stealth/VR4 go for $1500 the cheapest and a single cheap 16G would be max out on a car that puts out 3000cc displacement.
That is all on the short list, you still have a weak block with the wrong compression ratio and a FWD car with the unfamous butter 5 speed. They are made of crystal.
It is not worth at all, a few people have done it but as loing as you are willing to dump money in a non worthy project go ahead.
It is far better to start with the AWD plataform, my stock Stealth put down an impressive 268whp/300.3lb/tq with absolutely no mods, completely unmolested and with 112000 miles on it. I ran a 13.8@99 at 3100ft elevation in my first ever pass and cut a 1.808 60ft.
I am not John Force but I want to bring my point accross, it is a trillion times better to spend $2000 or $3000 extra on the initial purchase and get the real deal. Honestly, why to put a turbo on a N/A 3000 gtVR4 when you can get the next higher model for a affordable price?

and yea hes got the one with 222hp. hes talked about fully converting it to the vr4 with awd n all, although it would prolly be cheaper to just sell the car and just get a vr4.

It will be cheaper to buy a VR4 than do a TT conversion AND an AWD conversion.
AFAIK only one person has done the AWD conversion and they said that is was completely and totally not worth it.

The 222hp isn't too bad but the AWD conversion is out of budget. Keep in mind that the transfer case alone are very pricey even used. Mitsubishi does not rebuild the 3000 VR4 transfer cases anymore so you have to buy them used from a junk yard or new from the dealer ($2500 plus).
Tell your friend that Carlos (a guy that owned like 9 Mitsubishi powered turbo cars, 7 of them AWD) says that absolutely no way Joseeeeee
