I have driven an E 36 M3 for 2 years and tried out the E46. But I couldnt tell you where the 50k went. Can you explain it to me?
I think it went to the newer interior, SmgII or standrad 6speed, and Xenon lights. It also have more goodies like auto dim mirrors, 18 or 19 inch wheels and more adjustable seats.

As of performance the U.S. finally has the same engine but, i guess i feel sorry for the euro people who wanted a pure sports car and recieved a luxury car and forced to pay for the options. Hey , at least it's smgII.

Oh for the post i have a U.s spec m3 and my best time was a 14.0@99mph. That's with K&N cone and dinan software upgrade.

update on my e36 m3 purchase

Hobie,
Unfortunate to say, I didn't make the purchase.

The car checked out all fine with only 22k miles and was very clean being garaged and all, however, it didn't have the power seat/M steering wheel, sunroof package!!!

I mean c'mon, my civic comes fully loaded with everything and getting that M car would be an upgrade as far as in power and name ONLY, but in convenience and luxury it lacks!!! (BTW, I have custom leather interior) I might get the 350z and buy the EVO one year later, and that's a plan. Hopefully, by then the VIII will be out!

I dunno, man. I specifically looked for an M3 without the power seats when I was shopping. It adds something like 100 pounds, because they adjust so many different ways, and is just one more thing to go wrong. Same for the sun roof, but since that actually makes driving the car nicer (when you're not blasting around the track) I decided to go ahead and get one with it.

Maybe it lacks in the bling-bling, gold trim luxury you want, but I love the interior, personally. You're high if you think your civic is nicer.

Uh I didn't say my civic was nicer bonehead, I merely said the interior was more appealing due to the fact it has custom leather. Read the lines carefully before making any stupid *** statements.

Heh. Precisely like I said, bling-bling custom gold chain leather interior (and a watermelon launcher exhaust?). I'm having trouble understanding how you think you've got the luxury angle on the M3, but whatever -- you enjoy that civic, g. They're pretty nice cars.

What are you calling stupid ***?
And it's 200kg less... not 40kg...though the production model is
100kg less than current E46 M3...

EvoSouL,

I own a 1997 M3 2 door with luxury package....
Here's what I know...

US spec 96-99 M3 only has 240hp and 236ft lb of torque... though
many dynoed the car to have at least 250hp...
The acceleration performance however is similar to the 95's (240hp)
b/c of OBD2...

They generally do 0-60 in 5.5s and 1/4 in 14.0-14.1 though many have
done it in 13.9 (stock)

New E46 does it in 4.6s and low 13's...

Which package of M3 did you get??
They generally have either M3 sports seats w/o power OR
regular 3 series sports power seats (come with the M3 luxury package
only)
M3 luxury package also has wood trim interior...

I would look for a non power one since it is around 30-40 lb less
than the power one.... contrary of what donkeymaster said...

You like leather?? I REALLY HATE the leather seats... i slide around in
the seats as soon as I attack the corners...

M3 is really not a drag car... though you can drop in a turbo for 430hp
or supercharger for 360hp easily...

They are cheap too... 97 in the mid-low 20's... and 95 below
20's...

you read the newest car mag??.. That compare the evo7, z06, m3,
360 and elise (and bunch of other cars, like some overpriced vws)

I am actually.. really disappointed in the new M3s... WAY TOO MUCH
LUXURY!!!!!... who needs leathers seats?? navi???? power freaking
everything????? I miss the old E30 M3 that shows nothing but raw
motorsport... M3 is getting softer and softer... for 50k... i drop it for
a z06...
Or save that extra 20 and drive a EVO...
