Import Tuner tested STI

so im reading import tuner today which i usually dont read because all the cars in their are hondas/acuras but they had a 4 day test with an sti. so the guy testing wants to head over to turbo xs headquarters to dyno his sti but before he does that he goes and eats some where. While pulling into the fast food place he sees a red evo being driven by some dude from turbo xs and they both decide to race. Both cars are stock and the evo8 eats the sti of the line but the dude in the sti said he pulled back and smoked the evo8 with no problem. Now my question is the STI really that strong that it can smoke the evo8 in a straight a way that badly i mean come on yea it has 29hp more but the evo8 has a much better suspension setup. What do you guys think?

From what I understand, STi is faster than current EVO but like .3 seconds?
PS: I'm calling BS on the import tuner story. Not on you, but the author. I highly doubt he punished the Evo guy if he lost off the line. I'm sure if he lost off the line, the Evo guy is a good driver and they should have been pretty much neck and neck.
But in the end you know it's Import Tuner. They are the guys that legalized ricer fly bys. So that's probably what he did, the Evo guy probably slowed down thinking the STi was already toast.

I'd have to say it would depend on how far they went (and the drivers, of course). I've been side by side with a friends stock STi on a track; I had him low, but once I got into 3rd he came back. The cars are really close, though - more inching than thrashing.

I believe the STi is faster on the straights because it does put down more horsepower and the STi has a feature where the driver can manually or automatically alter the power being distributed to the wheels from 35/65 to 50/50. Our Evos don't have that much top end power whereas the STi does. However, the suspension tuning on the STis aren't as aggressive on a road course compared to the Evos so if racing on a slalom, the Evo would win. But then again, they're both 13-second cars. I guess it would depend on the driver.

its true that the sti should be able to beat us on straights but not punish us especially if the sti got eaten of the line

Same here, I'll have to agree with chillinevo i mean chillinevil... The car is just engineered to be the fastest 4cyl on this hemisphere! Come one 2.5 turbo... that says enough. I really think mitsu just came out with a small dividend of what they can produce... and after watching the STi and how successful they seem to be, id watch out for something interesting.

evo 9 2005 rumors from friend who sell them 2.0L still, basically the same...but 329hp....think that HP number is a slap in the face to someone??

think about it 2.0L = 329 hp = 164.5hp/L world record setting territory for a factory stock street car.

A few grand in mods to an Evo (about what you'd spend for a stereo and mods to stop detonating in an STi... ) and you will SMOKE an STi (and M3s, Vettes, etc. etc., etc.). I don't race, but it's nice to have have humbling power available.

So what if it's a stock EVO, the STi was stock too...

It's funny to hear some of the excuses you people will make up. "But it was stock" and "with a few grand in mods it'll beat the STi". The 2 cars are so evenly matched it's more personal preference on which one you should buy, and driver skill on which one will win.

Is it that hard to appreciate both cars?

I do appreciate both cars. However I made a valid point - the STi comes with no radio and costs more to begin with. If I take the money difference and apply it in mods to my Evo, then the STi and the Evo are on more even ground. And the Evo walks aways from the STi at that point. The other reason I didn't go for the STi (and I was a big Subaru fan) was the 2.5L engine. Untested, unproven.

Unfortunately, there isn't a price cap on street cars. So, most likely the STI's aren't going to stay stock for long. As a matter of fact, I saw two of them recently at a Subaru get together and they both had cat-back or turbo-back exhaust.

These cars are too close in $/performance to play that card.

I encountered an STi on my daily drive home from work. We just happened to be the only cars on that stretch of highway at that time. We were neck and neck when he punched his STi. When I heard his engine start to talk, I punched my EVO. I was in fourth gear. By the time I shifted into fifth, I had about a two car lead on him. Don't know about 5th gear though as we both slowed down soon after I shifted into fifth. The only mods I have are exhaust, intake, earthing kit. Sidenote...I did have a huge weight advantage. He had a buddy riding shotgun. I was by myself.

I played with a new STI a bit back, and I was able to make a teeny tiny gradual pull in a straight line through the first 3 gears. I think it has to do with how good a driver/shifter you are also.
