Good comparo but you are assuming they only choose the best motor of each category because other wise they are missing 5 more M-3 (E-30 and E-36)which were fitted with lesser powerplants.

Newer is always better, but in terms of feel/enjoyment, the opposite is usually true 
I think the only M3s that people really will consider to be classics is the E30 M3. At least those are the only M3s that are appreciating in price, and not depreciating, haha.

if i understand what you're saying, the author specifies at the outset the conditions of the comparison.
wow, their e30 m3 was way overpowered compared to ours, I mean 235hp n/a 4 banger, back in those days! Is crazy, our e36 m3 put out 241 hp with the straight s50/52 motor a couple years later, whilst their put down anywhere from 286-321
