i'm sure i'll be the only one to give you a legitimate answer, so here goes:

1.8t with a k03 sport turbo = 180hp, great low-end torque and pretty easy maintenance.
Have you or your wife driven a beetle? The visibility is WEIRD, the dash is huge and it's an awkward driving position.

Maybe look at the mk4 gti / jetta with a 1.8t or vr6 instead. 2003 model year and up.

Thanks bern, ya both of us have driven the newer style bugs and your right with the visibility being awkward. But she's set on the cuteness of the bug with the mild performance. Gotta make the wife happy you know. haha.

The 'New' Beetle is way outdated, both mechanically and fad wise. Go for a used GTI (or new) or a Mini, or get the original Beetle. Too bad they don't sell Fiat 500 in the states. That cute look will wear out pretty quickly and soon you and your wife would feel like you are cruising in your children's inflatable pool.

a family member of mine had a new beetle. seem that little things were always breaking... like window switchs, mirror adjuster switch, interior pieces wore fast. really seemed to be poorly made
