Mitsubishi more reliable than Lexus...

Somebody had posted the Consumers Reports 2009 Brand Reliability list in another thread...I can't find it right now. But was impressed to see that Mitsubishi is in 7th place...ahead of Lexus

I actually used to own a new Lexus and wasn't very impressed with its reliability - contrary to the hype. And so far (15K+ miles), My EVO X is proving to be very reliable.

Here's the list:

1. Scion

2. Honda

3. Toyota

4. Infiniti

5. Acura

6. Mitsubishi

7. Lexus

8. Hyundai

9. Porsche

10. Mercury

11. Saab

12.Subaru

13. Suzuki

14. Kia

15. Mazda

16. Ford

I disagree.

I owned a 2003 Lexus IS300 with mods and I loved that car. It not once broke down on me, nor failed me. I owned it for over 2 years, and the only thing I had to replace was tires.

I've owned the Evo for 3 months, and already replaced the motor mounts, clutch, half my vac lines, and an o2 sensor.

I also had a 1996 240sx with mods, and I think nissan should be lower...like number 5. I treated that car like **** and it never did me wrong. The KA was a Strong *** engine.

Now Ford belongs last, I had a 1999 Mustang GT and THAT was the worse car ever created.

Any car can be reliable. It just depends who had it before you or how well you take care of it if you buy it new. Of course there are times when you do everything right and it still breaks down, but that doesn't mean every other of the same car will do the same thing.

then again...i dont think they should do companys in general, but rather reliable CARS.

for instance, I bet you a galant will be more reliable then an evo.

ya because no one drives it to break it >_< Hard for a car with 5 miles on it to become unreliable o.O

I wish I could find that thread with the chart. CR does review cars individually and then roll them up to a brand-level.

But the chart had horizontal bars which showed the spread between a brand's worst car and their best-car. So some brands had really wide bars (meaning they had crappy cars and good cars). Mitsubishi if I recall was fairly narrow, so most of their cars were good.

First-year RX330..

Mine was a first-year RX330. It visited the dealership constantly. Abrupt automatic tranny downshifts (TSB for that - required reprogramming twice). Loose fuel lines (TSB for that). Defective Power Rear Hatch (TSB for that). Countless rattles and bad wind seals (TSBs for that), wouldn't start in cold weather (TSB for that)., transfer case leak (TSB for that), radiator leak (TSB for that), defective Airbag warning lights (TSB for that), Rear differential would THUNK when moving from coasting to gentle acceleration (TSB for that).

So it wasn't just me...the early-year RX330s turned me off from Lexus (and I was a big Toyota fanboy up until that point).

The Lexus service manager was on a first-name basis with me. And I was personally called when these TSBs would arrive because I had complained about them months earlier.

I do miss the Lexus Service experience...but given the choice, I'd rather spend less time in a Service Department regardless of how nice it is.

The worst problem was never fixed - Dangerous hesitation and/or delayed upshifts - there was a TSB for that - but it was never fixed to my satisfaction. google for it if curious - I wasn't the only one that complained. I was once was merging onto a highway, and pushed the pedal to the floor....and nothing happened for 2 seconds. I sat and watched traffic closing up to me in my rear-view mirror as I counted...1....2...then the engine surged forward.

The EVO is a low volume vehicle so it's reliability wouldn't affect Mitsubishi too much overall. Regular Lancers, Outlanders, Galants, and Eclipses are pretty reliable vehicles. Our 2007 Outlander hasn't had a single issue. Americans seem pretty down on the brand which is too bad because the vehicles are more reliable than Nissans, Mazdas, and Subarus.

I agree... the same people (generally speaking) manufacture the Scions, Toyotas and Lexus vehicles, yet the three have different degrees of reliability

How come Mitsubishi never came out with a luxury line? Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Chevy and Honduh all did. Subaru and Mitsubishi... not so much!

you know what I always ask myself the same... and the other day i was even thinking about a name for mitsubishi's luxury brand.... something like "Endless", "Diamond" or some sh*t like that lol

but that list is biased nonetheless... it's just about 10% the amount of users posting about a mitsubishi car than the rest of brands (ex. lexus). Say if out of 100 lexus owners 40 say their car sux, that means 60% have a positive view of the lexus brand, and if out of 10 mitsu owners, 2 say their car sux, that's 80% brand satisfaction, which puts Mitsubishi above Lexus... it doesn't mean its better... they're just A LOT more Lexus to receive reviews from lol

But hey, if Mitsu's reliability is growing exponentially, that only means good news to us. I still want to get me a 2013 Hybrid Evo

I owned a 1998 LX450 and it was a piece of crap. Leaked oil from every imaginable orifice.

My Evo has been dead reliable as was my 2001 SVT Cobra.

My point is that anecdotes really hold little weight in reliability studies.

Lexus has electrical problems, and since everything is electrical its just more things to go wrong.
