Tuning for DSM

Im new to dsms and this website and right now Im a HONDA guy with an Integra and Im thinking of getting a dsm 95 GSX and the guy is telling me it has a aem ecu, a/f wideband and it needs a tune really bad because of a new turbo install. What is the best and cheapest route to go to get this tuned/flashed...whatever to get it run right.

Find a local tuner shop that is an authorized AEM installer and tuner.

There are shops not to horribly far from where you are. Go on dsmtalk or dsmtuners and look around at sponsors

AEM ECU is a stand alone system, it is very powerful but not for the newbies. You can sell it for around $800 and buy ECM Link and Stock ECU for around $700. Not only will it run better for everyday use, it will be much easier to tune yourself!

Or... you can keep the AEM and spend $100+/hour for someone else to tune it for you and it will NEVER run as smooth as ECM Link. A good tune will take a minimum of 2-3 hours.

BTW, I have run AEM since 2003, and while I like it for my own race cars, I still use ECM Link on my street cars.

Yeah, I think AEM is overkill for most DSMs. People like it because its a "standalone" so it sounds cool to say your car is running it, but I think with all the advances made with ECU link, flashed 98+ ECUs or the tried and true chipped EEPROM ECU + SAFC you don't need an AEM.

Unless this is some 800hp+ monster I'm thinking the AEM is overkill and not worth the hassle.

I am also running an AEM EMS and I love it. The amount of data you can get from the internal log is awesome. Also when you put int run 10* of timing it does just that. You dont have to run any funny transformations on the data.

Now with all that said, DSMLink is much better for someone who has no clue.

If you are going to do the AEM EMS, then hit the aempower forums. Start reading up on the threads about the ems.

Here is one that you will find very helpful:

A keydiver chip is cheap and effective way to run bigger injectors without getting out of control with the S-AFC and keeping your timing in check. He can set a baseline of whatever injectors you are using so you only have to make small adjustments with the S-AFC. You also get things like a raised idle, stutterbox, no lift to shift, and some other goodies.

Huh. That's where I got mine. I didn't realize he had stopped. I'm guessing he's moved on to flashing '98-'99 ECU's (I can't remember if 97s could be flashed or not) You get the same results and those ECUs are easier to find and cheaper then the EEPROMs.

SAFC is a terrible way to "control" fuel!!! It was fine in the late 90's and even maybe in the early 00's, but in 2010?

With all the cars running 9's on the ECM Link, the argument that it isn't "hard core" enough simply does not hold water. And if you are on a tight budget you can ether get a "light" version or a find a used one.
