New M5

Spotted at Del Taco, apparently on its way from Port Hueneme.

Didn't know it was a twin-turbo. Hot

now that bmw uses similar engines for its base models as it does for its M models (with some different internals and certainly boost), i wonder how much money/effort it takes to go from 550i specs (which comes with the same 4.4L twin turbo engine, but 400hp) to the M5 specs?
if all it takes is minor internal mods and a tune, why pay $30k more for the M5? get the 550i, get a tune, change the exhaust tips, the badge on the trunk, and, voila

+1, exactly!

The 550i is a bargain with that engine and I feel way more appealing than a comparable E550.

I know that when Mercedes came out with the CLS55 rated at only 469hp, it was a marketing gimmick. Those supercharged engines were similar (if not the same) as the other models.

Wouldn't surprise me that if there is a difference between the 550 and the M5, that it's just in the tuning. Time will tell.

P.S. These cars are going to be silly-ridiculous when modified.

M's aren't all about engines. That F10 M5 has 90 different suspension pieces the the normal F10 535i/550i. Even if you get a M-sport the car just has lower springs.

well obviously there are a host of differences between the 550 and M5. fenders, badges, bumpers, exhaust, brakes, interior, seats, etc etc... but when it comes to high end performance vehicles, you always start, and, end, with the engine.
and it used to be that when you go for the M, you're getting something you absolutely cannot get in any "regular car". M3 has the V8, M5 has the V10.
now its like, you get a near $100k M5, and all you get as far as engine upgrade goes, is "higher boost"

just not the same. i hate the CAFE law!

The 400hp V8 comes with single scroll turbos. The M5 comes with bigger twin scroll turbos and some really trick sheet metal twin scroll exhaust manifolds; same manifolds as the X5M and X6M. They pair up cylinders from opposite banks to get the proper spacing in firing order.

yes, its more powerful, and more fuel efficient, and more flexible, than the previous engine. but, a V10, is a V10, is a V10. just has a ring to it. any lay person knew its a supercar.
