opinions on 2012 GLI? other suggestions?

So I'm in the thinking phase of maybe departing with my evo to get a new car with better gas mileage, but still having performance. I want something that is sporty and lightly mod but be better for my dd to school and my job, and once I graduate to the beginning of rest of my life lol. One thought is the new GLI. Turbo, sporty, good price. One I'd want would be mid 20's, so affordable and gets 30mpg highway. With a tune from APR, can make the car quick and I believe it said it improves gas mileage overall too. So with some light mods, like exhaust, tune, intake, better tires, ie summer, and some exterior tweaks like debadging and painting, it can look nice.

So to sum up my thread, what does everyone think of the new gli? nice car to switch to for better practically and having a new car? I've bought my evo x, my ralliart, and some cars before it used, so I'd like to buy a new car. Or other suggestions that'd be in mid 20's? I could maybe get 7000 towards a new car from evo and would need payments below my 338 for the evo.

IMO, if you don't need something immediately, wait for the 2012 Focus ST. Should be available in later winter/early spring.

One of my closest friends has a GLI with a chip. It's a great car, the interior is well laid out, the car is decently quick, and he gets almost 30mpg.

Yeah theres a lot of positives on it, but the negative would be a big one "way loss of performance". the gli's are scare since they are brand new, none in san antonio. waiting for some to come in so I can take a close look at them and test drive and see what I think. I like GTI's too but the one Id want I don't think I could afford, which is the top of the line 4 door autobahn which is over 30k and I need like 26kish. I know I have tons of more choices if I buy used or buy a car thats not as sporty/not sporty, like I really like the new sonatas.

I owned a MKV GLI and a MKV GTI. There are cosmethic differences and minor tweeks on the engine(TSI now, FSI before). The GLI always wins or gets second in just about every comparo that you can throw at it, while you have cars faster like the Cobalt SS or Mazda Speed 3 etc the GLI always wins by quality and overall price-package.

I had my GLI and GTI chipped and off course I also have the full exhaust(42Draft and design). You will not be dissapointed. Even though the cra is rated at "only" 200hp, the actual HP is greater, specially the torque.

A typical tune -flash will yield around 30-35hp and a massive 50-60lb-tq. Go for it.

Carlos

yeah I saw with apr with a stage 2 tune be in the 300 hp range. I have a lot of parts i'll be taking off the evo to sell to raise $$ that I could get some mods but save $ too, thus the whole point of selling evo.

On my 07 GLI I did 298lb-tq and 228whp on a Mustang Dyno with the GIAC Tune, a full 3" exhaust and a K&n filter. Might not seem a lot but it is very good considering the weight of the car and the very efficient transmission with low drivetrain loss.
Othe good things to consider is the Fast DSG shifting, great aerodynamics, low fuel comsuption , etc.

Would you choose the new GLI or a gti? One other idea I had after some research was the new sonata 2.0t se. Comes with sport seats sport suspension, turbo obviously. A company that made tunes for the genesis coupe are about to release One for the sonata too plus there's after market parts available already like exhausts and intakes. Would a sonata be too downgrade? Lol

Also anyone seen the info for the new Subaru brz? Production version will be announced in December to be at dealers in early to spring 2012. Honestly I think I'm gonna wait for December when the scion fr-s and the Subaru brz and I think the ford focus st will be announced then. I can deal with the gas and all for another 3 months? I think I can stay away from the Kia Hyundai family sedans lol. Also I think in December or January the 2013 genesis coupe will be announced too so I guess there's 4 cars I should wait to see

The GLI if you have a family and perhaps the GTI 2 door(actually 3 doors) if you are single but I would also consider the 5 door GTI and if you wait just less than two months you should be able to take a look at the Gold R20 with 265 hp and AWD.

The Hyundai is a great car but I am not sure how well the atermarket support is on that car considering that is a high pressure injection system. The VW has multiple turbokits and you always have the extra support knowing that Audi is always there so you know that the parts are made for VW/Audi.

Another thing to consider is the VW/Audi forums, the VWs forums are well more stablished than any other Hyundai forum. I still take a VW over a Hyundai any day of the week even if it was a second slower. Remember, Hyundai will lose value faster than a VW. Good luck!

My wife drives an 06 GLI and I absolutely love it. Hers has the DSG trans and I'll drive it on days I need to step away from the evo. The thing cruises on the freeway amazing and with the mods I have on it it is quite a bit of fun! Sure it's only FWD but with some meaty snows in the winter and summers the rest of the year the car actually has some traction.

Mods:
EPL chip
Neuspeed intake
ebay downpipe/cat delete
DIY BOV relocate
neuspeed dogbone insert (or whatever the rear motor mount is called)

My goal was 200whp/240wtq on DB's DynoDynamics, it's right there, perfecto:

Oh, and we've seen 34mpg with it, but when I drive it...more like 28 :P

Can't quite vouch for the 2012 though, I haven't driven in one, I'm sure it's very similar though!

Wanted to bump this up. Would going from my evo to a brand new '12 mustang v6 fully loaded be a downgrade? I'd get an auto, or maybe an auto base gt, and just upgrade the sound system, I hate the cloth seats of the base gt/v6 mustangs, but leather is in premium, and I couldn't afford gt premium. Don't want chevy sh*t like the camaro or anything. Only american car I'd get currently is a stang, or a cadillac cts-v, which I can't afford since I only like the new ones with auto.

I want to try stick again, but in the past I wasn't comfortable with it when I had a cobalt turbo ss.

So if I get stick, my #1 would be a wrx, #2 mazdaspeed3. gas is better on speed which is one main reason to sell evo tho.

Otherwise:
2012 'stang v6 loaded
2012 vw gli loaded

Sorry for the thread resurrection...

The wifey and myself are looking for a car to share... and we find ourselves looking towards the GLI. Going to be a DSG unfortunately ... did you end up getting a GLI? What are your thoughts of it so far if you have gotten it?
