How come a 1984 camry got 40mpg with a carburator gets better mpg then a 2011 camry hybrid.All this tech for nothing.

 

hybrid is a tag, it's already been proven that as a whole a hybrid vehicle (like a Prius) from birth to death is less "environmentally friendly" then your average, normal gas consuming car.

It makes people feel better about their purchase, because if you buy that hybrid supercar, you're going to save the world.

 

Or how about because i'll save money in gas over the alternative? Not everyone cares about the carbon footprint of their car. If I can pick up a 55 mpg prius for 19k (prius c) it's not because it's environmentally friendly, it's because i'll be saving $300 a month in gas.

 

Because a 1984 Camry was twice as slow, lighter, not as safe, and had less features. Without "all this tech" the 2011 Camry would still have that same old engine yet much slower and not getting anywhere close to 40 MGPs.

 

no not really smaller engine lighter car bigger engine heavier car so its the same thing.What features heated seats and all the other no sense not needed.At the end of the day a camry was suppose to be an economy car not a luxury car.your right probably not as safe but it still got better mpg then the death box smart car.

 

There's about 1000lb difference between a 1984 and a 2011 Camry. That's not all engine. I think we both know a new Camry has more than just heated seats. When the Camry was first introduced it was probably meant as an economy car but this is a new time period. If people want basic from Toyota they get a Yaris or a maybe even a Corolla. People in the market for a Camry expect more out of a car so all those features are needed.

you sound like my future father in law. Yeah cars had better MPG back then but like already stated all the crap they need to have now adds weight which = less MPG when u need a bigger engine to move it at the same speed the lighter car went. The down side is it isn't linear so u will need alot more HP for the weight which means crap MPG.

 

Hybrid fail. Make CAFE stop!
