Get a hybrid if youre worried about gas mileage, if price is a concern get a older honda cx/dx with 5 speed. They aren't all that fast but reliable and good on gas

Right now I drive a 94 Toyota Tercel as a beater car. It gets good gas mileage, it's dependable, it's dirt cheap, dirt cheap to fix, easy to fix and insurance is VERY cheap. It's a 2 door MT. I get about 30mpg and I just paid $120 for 4 NEW TIRES!!!
Get a beater with good gas mileage man. It's the way to go. I'm also looking into some used hybrids within the next year or two.

Ok you guys are going to hate me but. Get a Chevy Lumina, Mini-van or sadan. They are cheap to fix ride nice and are front wheel drive if you live in a snowy area. I have a 95 with 160K that I drive into NYC everyday. It's about 450 a year to insure and it's cheap as hell to own and fix. I also get unreal gas milage about 29 on the highway.

I'm looking for a daily driver myself.... I wanted to go to one of those government auctions, but you need a special license for them or something... my girlfriend's x-car was a 95 camry or something. The car has 160k miles on it ... minimal costs to repair it.... and it will not die!!! It runs pretty damn good... I'm in the market for a nissan (maxima, sentra), toyota (camry, corrolla), or a honda (civic, accord). I think those are going to be your best bets.
i bought my 94 integ 4-door july of 2002. bought it for 3k with a rebuilt engine.
runs like new! 31-35 mpg... runs on the cheap stuff
absolute best value car i've ever bought... highly recommend a honda

Get a Nissan Sentra SE-R, they are fun to drive, cheap and reliable. Still sad that I sold mine.
