torque "curve?"

I was looking to see what my fiancé's E92 M3 put to the wheels before I started modding my Evo X so I could see what I was up against. The dyno chart I pulled up made my jaw drop. If an engine's job is to make equal torque at all parts of the powerband, does that mean this is a perfect engine? 250 lbs ft of torque from 3,000 rpms to 8,000 rpms with almost no drop-off is pretty amazing. Sure, there could be more power, there can always be more power, but the linearity of the delivery is what blew my mind.

Personally I would get bored very quickly driving something like that.

Yeah that is a very boring looking car, 250tq is nothing at all

My parents had one of the latest M3's and it was not as fast or as fun as my Evo. Now their CTS-V on the other hand is quite fun to drive

A predictable engine and chassis is boring? Those have always been positive things for me. I like being able to concentrate on driving rather than remembering to apply throttle early to compensate for turbo lag, or having a squirrelly chassis in the back of my mind in the middle of a corner.

I have the most fun when I can confidently push a car to its limits, and to me, thats easiest with immediate flat torque throughout the powerband, and a predictable neutral chassis, but to each his own I suppose. The feel of a turbo spooling up is definitely a rush, but there's also something to be said for predictability.

I also think that anyone who thinks they would get bored with an E92 M3 has never heard that V8.

Agreed. I'd love to have similar motor in my Evo. In fact, our 2.0L turbo engine was a drawback for me; really didn't like the concept on every level imaginable. I'm not as opposed to it now as I was then, but given a choice I'd go for linearity every time. Last thing I want for my own Evo is a loss of spool, again, relating to the same idea.

I wasn't reffering to the chassis as being boring, just the way in how the power is delivered: Predictably

For track purposes, yes, a smooth powerband can lead to more consistency and better times, but it is not exhilerating like the spooling up of a turbo and sudden slope of torque.

Driving on the track is plenty fun in a car with a nice and flat torque curve. I think what you call exhilarating others call frustrating.

The fact of the matter is I, along with most other EVO owners will not track their car. Even a smaller percentage of M3 owners do drive their cars at a track.

So? I think a flat torque curve is great everywhere. I like turbo cars as much as the next guy but I don't think it's right to say predictable power is boring. HP is HP, a high HP NA car will toss you back in the seat the same as a high HP turbo car.

That is an awesome torque curve right there! What a great motor to make power all the way up there and carry that torque.

Don't worry what these fools talking trash about your M3, they are very well balanced and powered cars.

Yes that car was very boring to drive, I drove it fairly often during the 3 years of ownership. Sure it was faster than my Evo when it was stock but once I modified it the M3 just sucked in my opinion

The sedan looks 1000x better than the coupe.

Wait till the next force induction M3 !!! the amount of torque it will have is going to be off the charts.

THE Current M3 is the Bench mark everyone is going after sure it doesnt have high torque like ours ... but trust me its fun to drive still, now once the warranty is out ..... paying out of the pocket for repair is not fun
