MR-2 turbo

What are these cars capable of. Ran into a tuned version theother night and I thought it would be a lot tougher than it was. Just wondering about the car. I always thought that they looked awesome.

MR2 turbo isn't all about straight line, it's how fun it is in the corners, I don't believe it's as rear biased as say the boxter, but that mid engine rear whell drive lay out will drift through corners easilly. Not sure about its 1/4 mile capabilities, but then again, with money, you can make a geo metro run 13s or 12s.

It was a nice car. I know the handling characteristics are there. I thought there would be a little more power.

I encountered one couple nights ago. Again, I wasn't driving my Evo; I was with a 400hp V8 BMW 6sp. We met on an onramp. I let him go first for about 15 cars. Just to let you know that I could pass him at 145 mph. Not bad at all, pretty quick actually. BTW, I used the same car that beat an 03/04 Cobra from 75-145mph.

I'd put the MR2 Turbos in about the same category as the FD RX7's. They aren't that common, but can be very, VERY potent when tuned. The engine in them is the very respected 3SGTE, which ranks up there just like the 4G63, SR20DET, and EJ20. If tuned by the right people, they can make 300whp with the usual bolt-ons and tuning. But, again, they aren't that common, so you don't see them much. Nice cars though.

On the same note, you should also watch out for those early 90's Celica All-Tracs. If you see a 93-ish Celica with a hood scoop, be aware. Those have the same 3SGTE engine as the MR2, but also have AWD. Very nice cars. I owned one way back in the day for about a year. Got rear ended, so I didn't own it very long, but it was sweeet. Just like a DSM, really. They had kind of a baby Supra shape too, which was nice back then. The All-Trac and the GT-S version had wider fenders and bigger wheels and tires, giving them a nice beefy, curvy shape. Very nice.

My last project was actually a 93 MR2 Turbo before starting my Evo project. http://jadecrew.com/article_projectlan_evo

Although I added at least an additional 400lbs in weight (it was a show car) in the form of heavy rims, interior mods, audio/video setup with fiberglass/mdf panels, and body kit, the damn car still managed to run mid 13's and trapped 95+mph with bolt ons but UNTUNED using a stock jdm gen II 3sgte motor and turbo. Those cars are fun and if done right, looks so sexy. But great bang for the buck if you find one in excellent condition.

i read about one a few years back in Japan. it was running 650 bhp, and took 1.5 seconds to spool up (thanks to a T5 turbo)!

I love the way the car looks. I have been thinking about doing a project car and the MR 2 looks interesting. I was going to do a silvia but everybody is doing one now. I have also been thinking about a Supra , but cant decide right now.

Well, hopefully you dont run into the wrong one on the street. They can have crazy top end and not to mention have the potential to destroy an EVO 1/4 mile as well. We used to own one ourselves (our old buddy DavidV knows all about it) anyways we were building it to be a 9 sec sleeper so to speak We were looking at getting 600 rwhp as a friend of our did with the same turbo kit but too many problems when your making that much hp, we just eventually gave up and parted it out. Here are some pix...
