New 911 with a 5.0 flat 8

The 997 will be longer, taller and wider than the current model, and the range could even feature an eight-cylinder engine: the engine bay is said to be large enough to accommodate one, thanks to the widened rear track. The 450bhp, 4.5-litre bi-turbo unit used in the Cayenne would be an obvious choice of engine to fit, but rumours suggest that Porsche is working on a 5.0-litre flat-eight, which produces 450bhp even in normally-aspirated form. This version could well be badged 'S', to distinguish it from the six-cylinder model, which will probably use the current 3.6-litre, 315bhp engine, enlarged to 3.8 litres to deliver 350bhp, an upgrade which could appear in the last of the 996-series coupes. The standard-fit transmission will be an all-new sequential manual set-up.

I love 911 turbo soooo much that i cried when i saw my nighbor buy one and my best friend got one in cash in 2001, red. I love the car to the bone you can drive it every day and with small chip from APR for $2500 you gain 100 whp can you beleive this ****. I am going to buy one in the next few years so i guess i will wait for the 997 then.

I guess if they crampped that 5.0 engine in the 911, the tail of the car will be heavy as hell

There's so much wrong with that, it's not even funny.

- The 4.5L V8 is just that, a V8. It's longer, taller, and narrower than the 3.6L flat 6. The back (from the firewall to the rear bumper) would have to be substantially (6-8") longer, you'd lose the lower CG of an HO6, and the back would have to be higher.
- In current Cayenne trim, it puts out 340 HP/310 lb-ft. The base 3.6 puts out 320 HP/273 lb-ft. Figure 330/280 out of the 3.8 flat 6. The power gains aren't that good.
- A 5.0L HO8 has the same length problem as the Cayenne motor does.
- Porsche has variants producing well over 400 HP out of the current HO6. The 911 has had an HO6 for as long as it has existed. Tradition is a big deal for 911 owners. There'd be considerable expense. No real reason to switch, is there?

An NA flat 8 couldnt weight that much more than a flat 6 with two turbos an intercooler and the extra plumbing it takes to make it all work

Good point Brandon. As a base motor, though, there is a weight penalty. If it replaces the TT motor, it'd be a wash (probably lighter).
