wait fer the rx-8 (if you can find the $$)...I've heard of MASSIVE issues with the Rotary in the rx-7. either that or take a look at the first gens...I've heard decent things there.
The Renesis (correct?) rotary (in the rx-8) is supposed to be a VAST improvement

I'd take an Aztec with 500hp, amazing handling, that won't break down fer the life of it, over a Ferrari with a lawn mower engine that'll be in the shop more than my old Ford Probe...
but maybe that's just me

Well, my roommate owns an FC-3S RX-7, he would like to get the FD (3rd Gen) as well. However, reliability issue really scare him from actually getting one as his daily driver.
The TT of the FD has to go if you're looking for higher output. He told me that the piping design on the FD is gonna cause overheat and damage a lot of sentitive electronic parts. Therefore, 99.9% of the FD owners upgrade the cooling system first (radiator, IC, piping) and then switch to single turbo.
However, if tuned right, the rotary engine can be reliable, too. That means replacing all the seals LESS often
The N/A version of the 13B is surely very reliable, some lasted for over 150K without rebuild because of no boost.

I'm not even gonna bother with the reliability issues. They've become more of a joke to us Rx7 guys. It all depends on how the vehicle was taken care of. Alot of people neglected rotaries, but that doesn't mean the engine caused the problem. The reason the 3rd gens get the worst rap is because they're twin turbo'd. If you find a good one from a reputable seller, then you should be fine. Also, you need to learn alot more about them then just heresay about how unreliable they are. Mine's been running fine for me for a year now after headaches out the *** from the last owner, so if you know what you're doing, you can easily remedy a jackass previous owner's mistakes.

I never bashed the engine but when you hear the list of complaints about the engine. Its like 2nd Gen DSMs, maintenance them right and you got yourself a crank free car, just like that dude said about the rx-7.
ok i read.....now my turn to reply
let me just say that the rx7 is an amazing car (im more for the 3rd gen) ...... my homies bro had a 2nd gen i believe.....never had any problems with it......and its got a gang of miles on it.....and it is mighty fast.....but the 3rd gen rx7 is a beaut....i must say....and in MY opinion.......the rx8 is phat as hell.....i'd wait and get the rx8.....

BTW, the Rx8 is NOT a replacement for the Rx7 and not even very comparable to it. It's an attempt at a much more versatile car, where the Rx7 was a strict performance car. For the people that have rode in an Rx7 (of any generation), they know it's not the ride quality that a granny would like, but that's the thing I like about them. First gens are damn reliable, not too fast. Second gens are reliable (non-turbo) and/or quick (modded NA or turbo), and the third gens are not much of a daily driver, but when they're running good, it'll be quick as hell.

My ex had a 94 Rx7, it was nice...and sexy...she didn't have it modded because it was her father's car. And he gave it to her. Nice car...I like the sound...but nothing the VR-4 couldn't handle.
The third gen Rx is a weapon in every category. Ive seen a stock one win against an NSX, R33, R34, and an Evo 5 on a track. Not to mention the modification possibilities. Porting a rotary is a cheap way to make 75+hp. It just sucks *** that we dont get them anymore.
