Subie ever going to bail on flat-4?
A3/R/S3/TT/TTS/TTRS all use haldex and therefore transverse engines.

This judgment is too mean to say for Subie fans.
That's exactly what I said...
Like razorlab said, those exterior shots all look like an A3...

I think one of the primary reasons beyond the small factors which you can argue are true performance benefits is more about manufacturing and the platform. They carry a very similar layout among the entire fleet of vehicles they make. Subaru as a company is very small, their market share is very small compared to the large competitors. They are able to survive because they can carry over parts/layouts etc from one vehicle to the other with minimal changes. From a design to a manufacturing stand point that is very helpful.

It kind of is broke. The EJ is old. The heads don't flow well, and the combustion chamber design is old technology. They have ring land problems, as well as oiling issues. It's definitely time to retire the EJ. just like mitsu retired the 4g motors for the 4b motors. Have to know when to move on..
That said, Subaru had a REALLY good 2013 and 2014, even outselling VW in 2014. In terms of size Subaru USA is probably comparable to Mazda, BMW/Mini, and Mercedes; outselling Mitsubishi and the other minnows by 5-10x. BMW and Mercedes obviously have resources the other two don't because they're luxury brands, but Mazda is a good comparison, and they basically rely on 3-4 engines and a small number of platforms in the US. Subaru needs to rely on shared platforms/parts to compete, because all the other brands they compete with do the same thing.
If the EJ goes away, whatever replaces it will probably be used in most every model in some form.

The PacNW is an anomaly. The concentration of Lesbarus there is significantly higher than anywhere else in the US/Canada.
