No doubt. VW are more trouble than their worth. I put a transmission in a GTI a few weeks ago. The thing was bone stock with like 55k miles, no abuse at all and the differential grenaded, destroying the whole transmission. Including a hole the size of a gulf ball in the side of the trans. housing. From what I hear its a common occurence. Not to mention a PIA to work on, you need a "special tool" for everything. Dont get me wrong. I kinda dig the R32. I think it looks good and has some handling skills, but come on 240HP out of a VR6? You would think they could do a little better than that from the factory.

funny, the guys at griffin motorwerke, where i do all my track prep, are audi and vdub specialists, and they feel exactly the opposite about the r32- the vr6 is too heavy with not nearly the same potential as the 1.8T- and these are guys who play with these cars all day long. and i asked em about it cuz i think the car is kinda cool, not hoping to hear em talk **** about it for internet ammo.

that guy on the C&D site is a dipstick.

more potential? based on one company that says they can make some theoretical HP? sure. has anyone actually seen one these 800hp beasts?

based on more displacement? heh. i'm a former 3g eclipse owner. i used to think the same thing. i learned otherwise.

people should learn not to broadcast their ignorance in such public forums.

Actually The VW's do blow, the engines are pretty much the only thing somewhat dependable on them is the engine. I own a 1.8t, well atleast my mom does, yes they have tons of low end, tons of turbo steer as well. But the engineering on them is equal to the quality of engineering youd find in a happy meal toy. alot of plastic and they break easily. so far ive had about 2 grand in un-needed repairs, cheap tie rods, exhaust cannisters, etc. yeah theyre upgradable, but how can you upgrade when all your money goes to repairs??? If VW made their cars run as well as they look, they would be the best cars money can buy!(btw they are all manufactured in mexico and brazil, havent you ever wondered why they're so cheap?!?!)

Before you guys go comparing GTI's to R32's please be aware that alot of VWs are brazilian made engine/tranny's with mexiacan assembly. All R32's are pure germany from what I remember. Also they upgrade alot of components to make it an R32. It is very limited production and is not just another one of the million stamped off the assmbly line. As far as aftermarket goes the only real company so far is HPAmotorsports. There website was down yesturday but might be back up by now. They have an awesome twin turbo setup and nice suspension components. The prices are really expensive but some of the numbers and stats they are laying down are truely impressive. I dont think the car should ever really be compared to the STI/EVO since the goals and company ways are different.

This is my 2 cents.

Yeah I though you were talkin' bout' the Skyline too. And You're right... The R32 Skyline does have much more potential than an Evo, that and a slight more expensive, rare, supercarish. This guy I know took me for a ride in his heavily modded R32. It was in Sports Compact Car Mag and in the most recent Ultimate Street Car Challenge 3 and one word... "HolyF****n'S**t!!!!!!" It is purely road race only and a great car to do it in.

BTW I like how the bolt stems fall out after removing the lug-nuts much like a Porsche. That's about it though.

To be correct, ALL us vw's are produced in brazil or wolfsburg, but they are all ASSEMBLED and tested in the us or mexico, just like some mercedez, and bmws, just like evos, parts shipped here then assembled in north america, the point is, the problems are in the engineering, nice hp numbers and cool looks/features dont make up for shotty engineering, and loose vagina-like handling. btw, R32's share the same chassis as gtis, jettas, and golfs, and share the same vr6 as the gti vr6, just higher hp due to ecu programming, dual exhaust, maybe a few other tricks.

Is that true? Where is the EVO assembly plant located in the US? My MSRP sticker shows 100% manufactured and assembled in Japan.

As far as aftermarket potential, I highly doubt it could compete with the value of performance parts offered for EVO's and STI's. Yes I'm sure they'll be a few ridiculously fast R32's, but it will probably cost a ton.
