New Tranny : Audi TT
New Tranny : Audi TT
So I saw a small vid clip about this during lunch today and I never knew about it. Besides the TT having a new v6 it has a new tranny as well.
Its your standard auto box with a + and - gate for up and downshifts.
In addition they have the paddle shifts too.
Now whats different is when using the paddle shift the power goes through two clutches, one inside of another.
Whats this mean? Seemless shifts that are quicker and more efficient.
The idea is nothing new...........many companies have had these for a while........but to see and more importantly hear this thing shift was impressive. Even Ferrari's 360 modena paddle shift technology is cited as being a lag induced travisty.
So who knows more about this 2x clutch auto/paddle shifting tranny from Audi?

I've driven the TT with a DSG a few times. Quite impressive, and the car definitely outruns the 1.8T pushing 225HP except maybe right off the line.
It's a BorgWarner transmission. The tech was brought to racing in the 80's I believe, and it's a shame it's taken it this long to reach production cars.
Audiworld has an excellent article on the DSG transmission:

Is the new TT faster than the older one? Cuz the older one is slow as hell
Same engine as the A4, GTI, and the turbo Bug. My sis has the turbo Bug, I wasn't all that impressed. Plus I ran a '03 TT on the freeway before and it was pretty sad.

Depends on the engine, GReddy.
The base 1.8T pushed 180HP and had a 5-speed as an option.
The upgraded 1.8T pushed 225HP and had a 6-speed as an option. This was considerably peppier given the weight of the TT.
The new 3.2L is a 24-valve VR6 pushing 250HP and about 250lb-ft, with the DSG transmission. It's a hair or two slower than the R32 in acceleration because of the TT's extra weight.

The 225, in my opinion, still has a far too mushy suspension to really allow playing with it. Same with the brakes.
The 3.2 is what the TT needed to be to be a "sports car".
Shame they run mid-40s. I'd like one, but it's not my cup of tea, save for the styling, which will no doubt be timeless.
