yeah, personally, I don't understand that whole WRC-compliant engine nonsense. Your car is nowhere close to entering a WRC, it's not even remotely close to a WRC car despite its looks and heritage. Who _cares_ how compliant you are to WRC spec? Do you have a 34mm turbo restrictor? No? Hmmmm....

WRC STI and EVO has $15,000 suspension and $50,000 engine.

We are not even in the same world.

Well, I guess what I was trying to ask was,

if EVO's this good at this price segment, what would make it better? Be specific.

I was thinking in the whole, if mitsu had $20,000 more to do with this car, how would it be different?

Like some crazy patented suspension or will it be all luxury and quality of ride? or Some sort of monster 2 liter turbo engine that makes Viper's V10 look like kids play.

just was pondering.

I thought I wanted a M3 but I drove one. It's comfortable, but too much... I don't know... responsibility. It's too expensive to fix, if I drove it hard and broke something, compare to EVO.

well lets see.. the USDM MR would probably go around high 30's.... so for 50k maybe a 375 hp with even lighter frame or a lighter rim then the stock enkeis, maybe volks

In my opinion Mitsu should improve the Evos suspension and low end torque.
Just follow Volvo S60R and offer a adjustable suspension pressure, three stages: comfort average and race. You can go to a track day with the comfort option and then change to race mode inside the track.
Raise the engine displacement to 2.5L. Following STI
Change the camshafts to variable ones like STI, Double Vanos, VTEC etc...
Variable intake manifold to help low end power and high end too like 350Z
Raise the base model power to 350Hp, it is not so difficult!
Improve the transmission, put stronger parts including a decent clutch
Offer a Carbon fiber driveshaft for smooth ride

The most important things are: variable suspension and low end torque, the power we can improve by adding sport components....

Indeed; some shops do quite well importing the EJ25 STi motor from the US for street European STi's.

On the other hand the Evo is far more fun to drive quickly around corners. The disparity becomes apparent in fit, finish and build quality. The Evo fells cheap and spartan whereas the M3 feels luxurious enough to drive cross-country. I do not drive the Evo on the highway or on any trip longer than an hour. It has too much NVH to be comfortable for extended periods.

I know that many of you will disagree and claim that the Evo is a superior vehicle, but it is not. It is superior in a few performance aspects but as a whole the M3 is a lock.
Stable at high speeds? I guess they looked pretty stable when I was blowing past them at the track on high speed straights. The M3's were getting pretty unstable trying to keep up in the corners where the EVO will reel them in again. They are indeed cars intended for a different audience. No one will doubt that both have a very sporty nature but the BMW sacrifices some in one area to attain an admittedly large portion of comfort. All the better for some. I personaly drive my EVO everywhere all the time including semi-loud catless exhaust, built longblock, big turbo, stripped back end and trunk and Takata 3" four points with coilovers, etc. <shrug>
The best thing I can say is to each his own. You like yours and I like mine.

Totally changed my perspective on BMW...I have always felt their cars are overrated, but I am sure of it now. Now, an M5....DDDDDDDRRRRRRROOOOOOOLLLLLLL!!!
Wha....?

Ok, first of all, the E46 M3 outhandles *AND* out accelerates the M5. Secondly, the E36 M3 (the older one you drove) was named the best handling car at any price.....even over an F355.....just a few years back.

The Evo is hardly a better platform. Can it be made to be faster than an M3? Yeah. Does it slalom better? Yeah. that's about it.

should stick to what they do best, no need to try to compete in the M3 segment
Half of the buying decision on getting an M3 is for the BMW status I'm guessing
No way for to compete when people's mindset is stuck on the BMW status, lost cause

Exactly...
This is somewhat of a silly argument since one person might be comparing the two cars' track abilities while another is judging the overall capabilities. I will say this: at the track, E46 M3's tend to lose their brakes long before the Evo. With equal drivers, I would suspect that the Evo would win most of the time.

i think that if mitsu did all that luxury suff to a RALLYBRED car it loses the whole point..and if you who own and evo and complain about it are just weenies..dude just buy a benz then..

I would take an M5 anyday. If I did ever buy a German luxury sportscar, it would be an AMG...never BMW!! Again, just personal preference and opinion...not knocking the M3 at all, they are sharp looking..
