I did mine, and several since, using threaded rod. You'll need 8x1.25mm threaded rod. Use anti-seize while putting the rod in and make sure to tighten it a quarter turn at a time (once you feel tension) to avoid getting ahead of the tensioner. Also, you're better off putting three nuts on the outside end so you can put the socket over two and still have one to hold them in place. Very easy. BUT, make sure to get a good grade of rod.. not some cheap Home Depot crap. Got mine from a machine shop and have used it a couple times.
Good luck!

I used a rod with a tensile (sp?) strength of 8. The reason most people are breaking rods are 1) cheap threaded rod (I got mine form a machine shop). 2) Turning too quickly once there is tension and binding the belt tensioner, 3) Didn't use any anti-seeze or lube, or 4) Twisted the rod too far in (you only need one or two turns past where you feel resistance).
I've changed three sets of cams with the same rod now and have not broken it. From the three I've done I didn't even have anything that felt like pressure during insertion or removal. I just went slow until belt loosens. Once you feel tension it only takes about two turns before you have enough play in the belt; any further is a waste and a risk.
PM me if you need any details.

Sorry, not sure of one in your area; just call around.
The lengths are usually like 3' (standard length), but I cut it down to about 14". That's all the length you really need.
