I think you may have been confused about the "incidents" due to the noise, because although there were a fair number of crashes, we had no other "incidents" in HPDE1 that I know of. I saw 3 cars go off course and have to go back into the pits to get checked out, but none of those 3 were wrecks and there were no collisions that I heard about. The closest I got to an "incident" was when a 240sx in front of me was trying a little to hard to keep me off his 6, which caused him to enter turn 5 too hot and end up shooting straight into the grass instead of making the hairpin turn. That was pretty funny from my perspective.

There were quite a few incidents... maybe not too many more in group 1.. but overall, it seemed high.

Silver BMW. He wasn't the one who ended up on the tire wall was he?
Everytime I looked in my rear view mirror there was an EVO. I drove the green miata in HP1. If I missed a point-by I apologize. I always try to let guys pass.....I realize I was probably driving the slowest car out there.
I don't know how you guys can feel comfortable being on someone's *** during a hard turn though(i.e. turn 5). It's HPDE1. Most, if not all, guys have very little track experience. If he blows it on a turn and you're right on his ***.........

I'm running the Works P2 flash on pump gas. Other than what was done with the ECU I have not touched the boost. Truely I don't plan on playing with any power mods any more than I already have (cams, exhaust, flash). At least not for a while. Starting next year I'll be playing with the suspension. I've already got some average times down for a few different tracks. When I start changing from the stock suspension I'll be using those times as a baseline. Any power changes will skew my data. The stock suspension was great during my first year of tracking, but here we are 3 years later and it just doesn't hold up. The springs are too weak, the shocks can not handle the heat without throwing up on themselves and fading away. The combination of the two make for terrible transitions through the esses...ever so evident during the 7-8-9 turns at Gingerman. YIKES! And this is on the stock Advans with maxed camber. I couldn't imagine the how flimsy the stock suspension would feel once I mount those RA1s.
Anyway, back to the topic, I did like what I heard about the classroom passes. That needs to become the law of the land. On the educational side the classes become very redundant, but it is a great time to talk with others in your class and address certain issues, mainly passing. All too often it's the guy who didn't show up for any of the classes who spins out every session.

As far as following someone through a turn I can usually gauge my pucker level with how they take the turn. It only takes 1-2 turns before you know if they're good enough to follow closely or if you should take caution. If they're WAY off line, then well back off and hope to pass soon.

If Im instructing a guy... and Im in the car up front, I always tell my student to just wave his hand to acknowledge the guy is behind and that we'll give the pass next passing zone. They usually stress this in the classroom sessions, but I dont know if they did in the NASA group. This usually results in the car behind backing off... as well as my student paying more attention to driving his line rather than constantly looking in his mirror and worrying about the guy behind.
you sure it wasn't him? There was a silver m3 that was in the paddock right by the Evo guys who totally f-u-c-k-e-d up his entire passenger side.
it was an older guy driving it too........

Mazingo, I caught you a couple times on Sunday, always with that other Miata. I probably could have used a point-by once or twice between 2 and 3 but it wasnt the end of the world.
I dont get too worked up about this stuff. I had fun.

I was going to have him point you by the next lap around actually... but you had pitted.

An older guy driving an M3 that was hanging out talking to us Evo guys a lot (mostly making sure the totalled Evo driver/instructor were ok). By the end of session 5, I had not seen any M3 wreck, but it's possible that something happened in session 6. We left after session 5 in order to get home a bit earlier. I personally left, because I had torn up my R-comps and didn't enjoy my one session on the Advans.
Not sure when he wrecked.. but it was in HPDE1.
He lost it coming out of T9 and send the car backwards into the tirewall

The silver M3 that went off was after T9 and it was in session 6. I had just had a good run through the carousel and all of the sudden I see an M3 in my mirror going perpendicular to the track...

I honestly don't remember a green Miata, so although I may have passed you once or twice, you apparently didn't get in the way. Believe me, there were plenty of cars that DID GET IN THE WAY, and they were very memorable:
- the Kia
- the Factory Five Cobra
- the Z06
- the E30 BMW
- Mayhem's dad!!! Ok, he was cool and wasn't really slow, but there were a few times where I think he didn't realize how much I was having to lay off the throttle while waiting on the signal. Sometimes, there was an even slower car in front of him that he was waiting to pass, so he wasn't able to signal me either.

I'm not surprised that he continued to improve into the 6th session, because from behind, I could tell that I was making up MAJOR GROUND on him through the chute and coming around both 9 and 10. Oh, actually, I figured out his problem with the chute when I watched his in-car video. You could tell he wasn't on throttle, so I told him how I was literally flooring it in 5th through the chute then having to ram the brakes heavily before turn 5, so he started trying it and told me later that the difference was amazing. He probably started getting better at all the other turns, too, which is no surprise again, because his car is extremely capable. The same thing happened in our auto-x club. He had all the power, suspension, and tires, but was always several seconds off the pace. He then steadily improved until getting up to where he is now, which is always within a tenth or two of FTD.
