Crash on 210
So far the driver has been able to convince the police he was not involved. Of course that could change as the investigation continues.

"The car that struck spectators this weekend in Accokeek was not involved in the illegal street race, police said."

"Police say they have no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by the driver of the Crown Victoria. They stop short of blaming the victims."

The guys racing all had non-street-legal cars that were trailored in. I don't see why a stock crown vic was trying to race them, and I can't see why he would have backed up enough to get a head of steam that was enough to create 200 yards of an accident. Simple knowledge would disprove that theory.
I'm sorry if you disagree with me on this but street racing is not a crime. Watching street racing is not a crime. Speeding, reckless driving, careless driving....those are all illegal by definition. Does the fact that street racing may include some or all of these elements mean what these people were doing was wrong. No.
You could be in an accident because someone hit you or you hit someone whether you are going 5 mph or 105 mph and believe it or not you can die from an accident at nearly any speed. When you are driving at, above, or below the speed limit and your car goes out of control and hits somone else how is that defined differently than if you were racing or not. I expect that an accident can occur any and every time I get behind the wheel. In 10 years of driving I have only been in one accident because of that mentality. I am a defensive driver. I look out for the other guy more than myself.
Circumstances and a category are the only things that define street racing. If you drive off a cliff because you're going too fast. That's your fault.
If you drive off a cliff because the person you're racing swerved. That's your fault. You make the decision to get behind the wheel and make every decision after that in relation to the first decision. If you chose to run into the middle of the road day or night. That's your decision. It was the person who is driving the car that hit you who also made the choice to be there at that moment. Things happen. People are hurt, injured, and killed every day for a simple occurance of events that lead to that point. Place blame where it's due. We make our own decision to drive.
Sorry if this all seems cold and distant. All life is a combination decisions. Don't be upset that the other guy made a decision that counteracts yours.
That's life.

I'm sorry, but this whole post is pretty ignorant considering your friend just died as a result of a street race. Neither one of the cars racing wrecked or hurt anyone, but all you guys were out there in the middle of a highway because of a street race and thats why people were hit and killed.
Street racing isn't a crime? Are you serious? Maybe you are right if you talk about roll racing from 40-50mph on a long, empty road at night. But the kind where you bet money, bring non-street-legal cars in trailers to a setup point, block traffic on major roads, and race side by side up to 120-140mph?? None of that seems illegal to you?? I have done highway pulls numerous times when I have a long stretch of road in front of me, and I know things could go wrong when I do that, but you have HUNDREDS of people standing around on the side and in the middle of the road, not to mention cars all over the place down the sides and in the middle of the road.
Answering your first paragraph, the fact that street racing involves speeding and reckless driving DOES make it illegal. Especially because there are so many dumbasses that do it in residential areas or on city streets. Just because you think you are being safe doesn't mean you are.
I can see that its pointless to argue with you because you have a pretty screwed up sense of reality. Wait til the damn track opens for God's sake. Capitol Raceway and MIR are within an hour of the accident scene, why can't these people just go there? Its especially disturbing to see that most of the people involved in the accidents were over 30 and even 40 years old, some with their kids at the races. F-ing stupid people doing stupid things, and you wonder why bad things happen. Then try to blame it on other people. Even if the driver was involved in this somehow, nobody is at fault here but the people in the road.
You obviously don't understand the meaning of street racing as a culture. It's about risk. If you're at a track or not. You are still taking that risk. Less risk but risk is still there. It's about living on the edge. Getting the rush. Some people put money in on it. So what.
Oh. and bye the way....When you were doing your top speed did you consider how the lives of the people you interact with and love would be affected if you had lost control and died in an accident?
Their lives would be changed directly by your actions. Spectators assume risk by being there. They are willingly accepting their own outcome. Whether they go home or not at the end of the night.
If I go to a Zoo and a Lion gets loose and I get killed. I chose to go to the zoo.
It's people with your mentality that allow the government to intervien and create more laws to restrict our freedoms because you want to blame or sue for what the other guy did. Accept your own fault in the decisions you make. Most you can learn a lesson from. Some you don't.
I'm a realist. I create my own outcome in every situation.

This thread has clearly gotten ****ing retarded. dcorn at NO point has said anything outside of common sense. Why is this debate still going? Street racing is illegal.... PERIOD... **** a culture in the ***. There are tracks ... use them. I am DEEPLY sorry for the lose of life and the poor families that have to suffer them, but this argument .. that is a colossal waste of time, serves not but an insult to the dead. Normally I wouldn't even respond to such rantings but this is ridiculously annoying. I think what is going on here is that emotions are running high and people are trying to give a reason why something so horrible happened. Unfortunately, that isn't going to help. For all involved, I wish them piece and healing and I'm sure it will take a long time for that.

I guess if someone walks up to you on the street and shoots you in the head, you won't mind because you chose to be walking down the street, right? Then they shouldn't be arrested for it. That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Its actually hard for me to make an argument against what you are saying because it is so incredibly stupid. You are trying to tell me that people shouldn't be held accountable for their actions if they injure or kill someone else. If I was going 120 on a highway and hit another car, I am fully aware that it was my fault for speeding and that I'd be paying for the other person's damage. You are trying to say that I shouldn't pay because it was that persons fault for being there when I hit him. WTF sense does that make?? Please step away from the weed.
We live in a society with laws. No one agrees with all of them. No one obeys all of them. There is no point arguing. You won't change someones opinion over the internet.
Hopefully some readers will consider racing at a track in the future, but some won't.

"Don't watch the news. Street racing had very little to do with it. Just the "man" trying to come down on our freedoms. Tightening the belt a little more."
I completely agree. Let's reflect....
Street racing - Illegal
Standing in the road - Illegal
Driving with your lights off at night - Illegal
Running down eight people standing in the road because you couldn't see them without your lights on at night. - Illegal
Whole thing is stupid, and in the end eight people died and the event continues to give the modified car scene a bad name.

Most "innocent" drivers would not be going in excess of 90 MPH with their headlights and all exterior lights off down a completely dark road @ 2:30 in the morning. The Fact that the people killed and injured were spectators to a street race is the only tie to the whole incident. And to add to that. The 2 cars that were racing as this whole incident occured were......You guessed right if you said "Muscle Cars that were trailored in!"
So now the news is showing street racing as this "fast and furious" thing where a bunch of guys and girls in imports causing trouble.
Get the facts before making comments and calling people names. Yes Street Racing IS ILLEGAL. But so is driving with your lights off @90+ mph on a dark highway @ 2:30 am.

Keep thinking that donkey! Tell that to the guy I just pulled out of his car after doing everything right and still managed to get t-boned by the 18 wheeler
