Maryland Virginia Points transfer

If you get a ticket in Virginia and live in Maryland....do you get points on your liscense or just pay the fine?

Lightbulb

My information is over 10 years out of date, but it didn't carry over in the early 90s (when I got a few tickets in MD). Basically, just pay (or challenge, whatever) the ticket, you shouldn't get points if it's not in your state. This probably only applies to generic speeding tickets, if it's DUI or reckless or something, I bet they apply it to your license. Best way to find out is ask your DMV in MD. You can also just request your point total from the DMV, I think it's free.

Hey Shaul..

MD and VA point systems are diffrent. You will probably get a point or two but it wouldn't be the exact penality as if you were ticketed in MD. In VA you start with 12 Points and work backwards, in MD you start with 0 Points and work to 8. Most of the time if you get a ticket in VA you will most likely just get a single point, no matter what the infraction.

pay the ticket 1 dollar more than what it requests. When you get the 1 dollar refund check for overpayment (do not ever cash it!) as that is when they finalize things and your info is sent into the point system.

Well I have been told by several people that it does work and also told by my relative that it works. He actually tried it (lives in Potomac, Maryland) It worked for him. Can't hurt to try. Let us all know how it goes.

It does. I heard long time ago from some other forums that Maryland and Virginia now have different agreements.. so whatever ticket or points you get, it affects your license.

This is just what I heard.

ok... well its different from md to va then, because i got a "wreckless" in MD, (would have been 2 points, after reduction) but i had a VA license, and it didn't even show up on my VA license..
