Street Racing Laws Getting Tougher

COUNCIL ISSUES PLAN FOR CURBING STREET RACERS
City Puts Forth Proposal For Increased Racing Penalties
by Jennifer Fullerton, Jemal Duran

COLORADO SPRINGS POLICE AND CITY COUNCIL ARE HOPING TO DROP THE RED FLAG ON ILLEGAL STREET RACERS, AND THE FLAG THEY'RE WAVING IS PRIMARILY HARSHER PENALTIES.

ON MONDAY, THE COLORADO SPRINGS POLICE RECOMMENDED BIGGER FINES AND EVEN JAIL TIME FOR VIOLATORS.

ACCORDING TO COLORADO SPRINGS POLICE CHIEF LUIS VELEZ, THE POPULARITY OF STREET RACING HAS GROWN UNABATED OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, AS HAVE THE NUMBER OF RACE RELATED FATALITIES, "From 2002 to 2004 there were 17 fatality accidents related directly to street racing or exhibition driving."

NOW TRAFFIC COPS ARE WORKING EVEN HARDER TO CURB THE PROBLEM.

THEY WANT TO INCREASE THE FINE FOR RACING BY $150.00, AND TACK ON A POSSIBLE 10 DAY JAIL SENTENCE.

THEY ALSO WANT TO INCREASE FINES FOR REPEATED NOISE VIOLATIONS, AND SOME ARE GOING SO FAR AS TO SUGGEST THAT THEY SHOULD JUST TAKE AWAY THE KEYS.

AT THIS POINT IMPOUNDING A CAR CONFLICTS WITH THE STATE CONSTITUTION, BUT THE CITY COUNCIL IS DRAFTING A NEW LAW FOR THE LEGISLATURE TO CONSIDER IN JANUARY.

OTHER CITIES, WHICH HAVE ELIMINATED THE STREET RACING PROBLEM, SAY YOU SHOULD GIVE RACERS MORE OPTIONS.

LEGALIZED RACEWAYS IN BOTH DENVER AND PUEBLO SEEM TO HAVE IMPROVED THE SITUATIONS THERE.

CURRENTLY, THERE IS A PRIVATE EFFORT UNDERWAY TO BUILD A TRACK IN THE ELLICOTT AREA.

FOR NOW THE MAJORITY OF VIOLATIONS ARE SEEN ON POWERS AND ACADEMY BOULEVARDS, AND POLICE ARE OPTIMISTIC BIGGER PENALTIES WILL HELP.

dam im glad i dont live out there. they ban n make laws for eveything and its NOT gonna stop street racing though. with all the adreneline and thrill seeking that takes over ur mind n body.. you dont even think about tickets ect... maybe for half a second.. but by that time.. the race is on. they gotta be a hell of alot carefull though.. 17 deaths on street racing alone is alot

I wouldn't even street race if challenged. Stupid way to hurt yourself and others. I already get hassled by our fine CSPD for just driving an Evo. I don't need to give them a reason to jail me.

In other words, the city is broke and the streets need to be redone, so let's make all of our make money off the street racers instead busting meth labs and catching theifs.
