2008 Rally in the 100 Acre Wood
2008 Rally in the 100 Acre Wood
I know it’s a little early yet, but wanted to let y’all know about the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood coming up again this Feb. 22-23 in and around Salem, MO (about 2hrs SW of St. Louis).
If you’re not familiar with it, it is one of the 9 rounds of the Rally-America National Championship, the first five of which count towards qualifying for the X Games Rally race. It’s the closest thing to WRC that you’ll see in the States.
We can always use more volunteer workers to help out during the rally. The most common spots are as control workers and stage marshals. If you haven’t been to a rally before, control workers time the cars into the stage and at the finish. It’s a pretty easy and fun job where you get to see the cars and drivers up close. No experience needed, as we’ll show you the ropes.
Stage marshals park at intersecting roads to the course and keep the locals from entering the road while the cars are running.
Other jobs include Sweeps and Medical, but some experience is required for those.
All workers get event t-shirts, hat pins, lunch on Sat., maybe hats, and get to come to the after party with dinner and free Fat Tire Ale.
Of course if you don’t want to volunteer, you can also just spectate. We’ll have spectator guides available the days of the event or on the website (but not until about a week before the event).
If you’ll need a motel, get one soon as most rooms in Salem are about gone. More motel info can be found at www.100aw.org.
We’ll have more info up on the website as the event draws closer or email me.

As mentioned above, it's about a 2hr drive from StL, depending on where you start from. Come on down.
Worker registration will be at the Salem Fire house again this year on Thursday afternoon until 8pm or so. If you can't make that, then you can come to the Holiday Inn meeting room in Salem Friday or Saturday morning. I don't have the exact times yet, but it'll be on the website in a week or so.
Spectator guides to the spec. areas will be available around the area that weekend. It'll be on the website as well, but not until a week or so beforehand.

I just wanted to let you know that it's never too late to sign up to work it. This event requires a lot of volunteers and we could always use more. The Rally is two days (Feb. 22-23), but feel free to only come one day if that's what you can do. To volunteer does take the whole day, though, as you will need to come to registration first and can be out in the woods for a good stretch. We will provide lunch on Sat. and dinner at the party Sat. night, as well as other goodies.
Registration is at the Salem Fire House right in town on Thursday, all day. Then it's at the Salem, MO Holiday Inn Express meeting room Friday from 9-noon and again on Saturday from 6:30-8am. You can sign up online to save some time when you come to reg.
If you can't volunteer, we hope you can come out to spectate a stage or three. There will be one stage right in town in Potosi, MO around 3:30pm on Saturday. It's a small one, kind of like a rallycross, at the Lions Park on the west edge of town at the intersection of hwys 8 & 185. There will be other spectator areas out in the woods that you will be able to find out about from the paper Spectator Guides that will be available in Salem, Potosi and Steelville areas rally weekend. They should also be listed on the website, but not til right before the rally.
Hope to see you there.

Fyi, there will be a marshal training session in Salem on Friday 2/22 at 9am at the Salem Firehouse. If you haven't registered in person by then, you can either come to registration at the Holiday Inn before the session or come after.
Whether you've marshaled before or not, this brief training session will be a great refresher course on what to do while marshaling a rally. I highly recommend attending if you can.
