Passing Emissions, ECU mods, and E-check ?s

I have a question about passing the emission checks. Actually very basic - what is the process that they use these days? I read the people that say, I did [this - links below] and passed the emissions check.

Last time I I lived somewhere with emission checks, it was in Baltimore, before I could even drive (and before OBD-I, OBD-II). And I remember the classic sniffer in the exhaust, and the guy revs the engine, and you pass/fail

So what happens at an emissions test today, and what state are you in? Just curious if they re-implement emissions testing here (they once had it, got rid of it just before I moved to Cincinnati many years ago).

Are people passing because on an OBD-II car, they are only doing testing via the OBD interface, and no longer doing the sniffer check (which is maybe reserved for older cars that are not yet licensed as historical?)

Thanks,

I'm in Ohio too and subject to e-check.
I am having trouble passing.

Here is my experience.

My car had a dead(ish) battery, so the ecu was never 'ready' when i went to echeck. so they wanted to sniff it and I wouldn't let them (they try to hook up to OBD2 and check for rear 02 codes and evap system codes). I kept throwing a P0420 catalyst below efficiency code so I changed some periphery bits around to make it go away.

I drove 50 miles then straight into echeck, still wouldn't communicate with ECU.

Now I have a new battery. I reflashed the car today for other reasons, drove it to columbus and back (230 miles). I will be going to echeck tomorrow and i might even let them sniff it.

So the basic process is. They hook up to OBD2 and check cat/rear O2 sensor codes, if that fails to connect they sniff test it. They look at hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide (although they theres no limit to it obviously), and NOx. They also do a gas cap pressure test.

The stuff in the 1st link didnt work for me by the way.

Here in Wisconsin, all they do is plug it in and that's it. It kinda sucks that the older year 95 and down doesn't have emissions at all when they are the most polluted ones.

Exact same in Chicago and surrounding sub. Am running with an AEM and had to get a stock ECU to pass. I don't think they have sniffer in Ill anymore.
