SST Overheated. Now what?

Did another track day at Thunderhill yesterday. I finally get into a groove with the car, when 'ding!' The slow down sign shows up. I drive for 1/2 a lap, the car cools down, and I take off again only to have the 'slow down' appear again after 2 laps. The next session after the car could only run for 14 minutes before the 'slow down' shows up again. Ambient temp was in the 70s yesterday, so it wasn't even hot out. My mods are in my sig.

So anyways, the question is: What do next? The weather is only going to get hotter, as I get better, the car is only going to be pushed harder. Plus, I plan on upgrading to a BBX turbo next year.

I already know I want to get the SSP front mount tranny cooler, but here's what I don't know:
1) do I need a larger pan? if so, do I get the shallow or deep?
2) Is it a pain to install the cooler or the pan? If installing the pan is a big deal, I may just get the upgraded clutch packs. I'd rather wait on the clutch packs though
3) Which tranny fluid to replace with? OEM? SSP? Willall?

Don't you dare resize it. It's awesome just the way it is.

my car makes about the same whp as yours. i get the warning light after doing ~5 laps at buttonwillow. i am really hesitant on installing an aftermarket cooler though as i don't want to ruin the warantee. so..... reading some of the posts here, i heard that you might be able to get away with merely removing the fog lights. hoping that might give me ~5-10 more laps before the light comes on. if i can get ~10-15laps / run, i'm happy enough since i usually pit after that long anyway.

so, i'll let you know if the fog removal works well enough.

btw, isn't gst that big tuner up north with the crazy +++hp mr? tuners down where i live don't want to touch the sst programming, but seems gst can do something to give you more power?

Don't know if this will help, and it doesn't quite make sense to me...

What ASC mode did you use?
i did a track day with it on "off" and lasted 4 laps before the dreaded slow down.
came in, idle was all over the place, waited 45mins or so until the next session...
next time i used "off off" and it went hard for the full 12-15minutes of the session without any dramas.
4 more sessions and no dramas in "off off"
This was in S-Sport mode BTW, paddle shifting

I wonder if the ASC somehow regulates power/torque by slipping/modifying SST behaviour?

(I have FP Green and foglight delete, no other SST cooling mods, stock fluid. Before the Green went on i could do full sessions in any ASC mode with no problems)

Beeble, very interesting observation re: ASC. I did have it full on. Good know you still have problems even with fog delete too. My plan is to get a ssp cooler for my next event in august along with fog delete.

St1g, Bryan at gst is the man. He did the tune on my car. Rest assured, he'll be tuning my car again when I upgrade to a BBX next year.

Some have also discussed/noticed that left foot breaking can also lead to a quick over heat. I would definately turn the trac control "off off" the tcu will constantly try to adjust and put more stress/heat into the sst on the track.

Everything I've ever read talks about turning traction control off at a track. Is there any reason why you left it on?

I'm still relatively a beginner. My plan was to turn off the Asc for my next event, but I do plan on getting the ssp cooler too, I guess I will never know now...

I hear ya. The SSP cooler is a good idea anyway. I'm planing on doing the whole SSP upgrade at some point.

I've found that the car behaves a bit more predictably with the tranction control in "off off" so you may actually like it more. The AYC still functions.

Just like the guys said above make sure its in the "off off" mode and between that and the SSP cooler you should be able to run till you tires are bald or your out of gas

Just starting my MR endeavor with track days. If this works like I think, then turning of the nanny on the car will help, because it is always oging ot be modulating, which would cause more heat. I would also be curious to see how the driving pattern would affect this. I will fill in more later, hoping to get to the track tomorrow for some shake down runs.

I am an instructor for many High Performance Driving schools at various tracks. I have removed fog light. It did not help enough. I never run with ASC because it just gets in the way and will over work the car for track events. I have install the SSP trans. cooler. Unfortunately after about 20 minutes at Mid Ohio the dredded "SLOW DOWN" warn still apeared. I have not installed the SSP larger oil pan but I am leary that it will not add that much more cooling capacity. I verified that the pump is provided about 2.0 gallon per minute to the cooler so it is helping some for sure. I am very disapointed with SSP. Although they used good components, they did not do the engineer or testing to verify that the cooler system was sufficient. I spent $1600 on their cooler, tran fluid and filter only to be plagued with the same old problem.

sigh... that's bad news.

i did talk to SSP last week though, and they did mention having a dual cooler setup, but they said they've only sold one of them, being to a middle-eastern client in ultra-high temperatures. i wouldn't say "they did not do the engineer or testing to verify that the cooler system was sufficient" though, since they most probably did (i've never heard of anyone running that setup and still getting the warning.) anyway, maybe the dual-cooler is the way to go for you? wonder if you can retrofit it to your current setup.

also, since the oem cooler is left untouched, perhaps you can add a fan behind it? i've seen this done in some other net article. sorry, don't have the link. that might be enough to keep you out on the track.

That's a bummer. I wonder how those getrag guys doing 24 hour endurance racing at the nurburgring manage to pull it off?

Wonder if anyone tried getting the OEM JDM Intercooler sprayer and have it spray the Tranny cooler instead of the Intercooler?
