Dual Clutch Transmission Thread

Ok, first off this isn't a "GSR vs. MR" thread.

I want to discuss your experience with the MR's SST transmission compared to other dual clutch transmissions.

Do our SST'S blip the throttle on downshifts? I don't think I have enough mods to hear the exhaust note and notice it, but when driving a e92 M3 and a ISF I can definitely hear the "bark" on downshifts, but then again those are V-8's.

I've driven: SST, DCT, PDK, DSG, ISF's tranny and Dodge's "Autosport" and I'd have to say PDK hands down is the fastest, smoothest most simliar to an F1 tranny out. Then would be DCT and SST.

I absolutely love my car, but wanted to hear the community's thought on our SST and how it compares to other similar dual clutch transmissions.

Well, it's not surprising that you have the DCT and SST tied, as they are 99% the same thing (both are Getrags). One reason to love the Porsche is that they are 7-speeds, so it's always a smaller step, so it can always be set to be faster since it's always a smaller rpm difference. As to whether any or all of them "blip" the throttle, I'm not sure, but the issue is usually the rational inertia of the pre-clutch stuff. The more rotational inertia, the more a blip is needed to avoid upsetting the car (and occupants) on a down-shift. It would surprise me quite a bit if the Getrags don't do this.

Good point about the P car being a 7-speed and the ISF being an 8-speed. Those are much smaller gear ratios I would imagine.

By "blip the throttle" you mean rev match, correct? The SST should rev match on a downshift, as if you were performing a heel-toe maneuver.

Besides my Evo SE, I've only driven a Volkwagen GTI with a DSG transmission. I very much preferred the DSG's clutch engagement feel over the SST's.

The DSG's engagement felt much more solid and pronounced, yet not annoyingly so. I could hear a muffled "thud" when the clutches clamped down, which translated to a sportier feel. In comparison, the SST feels like it feathers every single gear, except between 1st and 2nd.

The DSG is also much quieter in operation than the SST. The SST makes a fair amount of clunking noises. It doesn't bother me at all though.

Borg-Warners are wet while Getrags are dry, right? That could explain the difference, although I would have expected it to be the other way around, to be honest.

They are both submerged in fluid.

Well, that shows my level of non-understanding. I thought the MR had a 6DCT250 in it.

You understand me! Yea, I drove a GTI with the DSG and would say I like the up shifts more than the downshifts. The GTI makes a distinct "fart" sound when changing gears, nonetheless it was smooth. The downshifts however, felt like it had a torque converter.

Wish they would come out with some type of tune to make the SST shift smoother and faster

Close! The MR uses the 6DCT450.

Have you tried the different shift modes (Sport, Super Sport)? There is definitely a difference between Normal, Sport, and S-Sport modes.

I remember a thread on the tuning sub-forum (or was it here?) where a member looked at what actually happened when changing between modes. If I remember correctly, there were several things that changed: clutch pressure, how quickly the force was applied (ramp up pressure?), throttle response, and a few others. Thought it was pretty neat.

I'm waiting for a mechanical component that Jack's Transmission is developing before I touch anything on the software side or do any power mods. Take a look at this thread --> https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/mi...ade-worth.html

Yea, I'm almost always in S-Sport. Interesting to hear what's actually happening behind the scenes for those modes.

Yea I've been following that thread. So far he states that they have made something that shifts quicker and smoother, but from what I remember he's still testing it.

I recall GIAC or APR made a flash tune for the VW R32's tranny back in the day. I was hoping for something similar to that.
