EVO "almost" eats Viper at Buttonwillow!!!

The EVO driven by Kent Jordan and built by John Mueller and Road///Race Engineering clobbered a Viper last weekend (Nov. 13 & 14, 2004) in the Group A Race at Buttonwillow Raceway in California. On Saturday, the Viper managed to pass the EVO, but then the EVO stayed on his tail almost the rest of the race.

On Sunday, the EVO was ahead the entire 30 minute race, with the Viper on his tail trying to pass. On the very last turn of the race the EVO's brakes faded, causing him to put two wheels in the dirt briefly. The EVO got back on track, but that stutter step allowed the Viper to pass literally at the checkered flag. Kent posted terrific lap times and John's car acquitted itself admirably.

One of the judges called the car driven by Kent a "Viper eater" !!!

It is a Vipereater because the Evo was spanking it all over the track. The only reason the Viper won was because the Evo slid out right before the finish. In a way the Viper won because the Evo gave it away. Read the WHOLE story please.

A Viper has 550 hp stock, and although I'm not sure, the one at Buttonwillow was probably modified. Kent outdrove the Viper driver both days in an EVO that is only mildly modified. Everyone I talked to said so. Sorry you guys can't be proud of the people who campaign EVOs in real races against cars that cost 3 times as much. This was a NASA sponsored event.

I feel you man. That Evo had the race in the bag...just there was that unfortunate incident before the finish line.

but technically, its not a viper eater.. i love the evo and get it all the respect in the world, but running against a viper at the track and loosing and calling it a viper eater is contridicting itself. Now, giving it props because it kept up is one thing. Also you cant base it on a "what if" the brakes didnt mess up kind of deal

If you read the story carefully, the Viper was clearly trying to catch up to the Evo, in the Sunday race. The Evo slipped out right before the finish. If he hadn't slipped out then he would have finished with the Viper behind him...obviously.

Really doesn't matter how the EVO lost, a lost is a lost. So that EVO is still no Viper eater.

True...but the Viper got a lucky win. If I was the Viper driver I would be thinking " Boy that Evo is quick, he rocked me. Lucky for me he went off track and I was able to sneak passed him to the finish." If the reverse happened and the Viper was winning all over the track and the Evo slipped by at the finish, I would still call the Viper an Evoeater.
