Window tint on the track?
Window tint on the track?
I was wondering whats the deal with having window tint on your car if your going to take it autocrossing or on the road coarse? Are you not allowed to have it, only allowed to have it in some windows, or just have to roll down your windows, or it doesnt matter?
I'm from NY, so if especially anyone in the tri-state area has any input, it would be greatly appreaciated. And the rest of you aswell.

For those of us that live in the desert, if you even want to sit in your car for more than 2 seconds during the summer, you have to have tint. When it is 110+ out, imagine how hot the car can get...
It doesn't matter for auutocrossing.
For roadracing i cant think of a specific rule in SCCA that doesn't allow it, but...
Good drivers look through other peoples cars to look ahead at whats happening so too much tint can cause a danger, I believe NASCAR made up some rules a few years ago because of it causing a problem to drivers behind them seeing crashes starting to happen and hand signals.
For track days, I see all kinds of stuff and we dont worry about it, PCA and many days insist on "over the top of the car" point-bys to avoid the hassle of seeing into the car. You might want to think about the amount of tint though from a safety standpoint for yourself.
If you are going to run a race series the first purchase should be the rulebook, then you can make sure.

I have tint on all sides and rear window, and a visor strip on the top of the windshield, and have no problem with it on track or autocross. The sides don't matter because you roll them down, back is fine (you can still see out, and you point-by out your side window), visor strip reduces glare so is actually safer (and common on real race cars).

Having said that, visibility (yours and the guys behind you) will definitely be reduced if you go too dark. This kind of thing is left to the tech steward's discretion. If they feel it's dark enough to pose a safety hazard, they have the authority to disallow the car. I would be VERY surprised if someone with limo tints would be allowed on track.

I believe there is a rule the SCCA GCRs for road racing that states that tint is now allowed. I don't have my book in front of me, but I will post the page it's on later. I remember reading about that when i was building my EVO for track. When racing with other clubs that allow tint, I would stay FAR away from cars with it due to some of the issues about being able to see through someone else's windows to view an accident, as stated above. I can't tell you how many times I've been saved from a major accident because I could see through the guy's windows ahead of me.
As far as Solo2, there is no rule that says you can't (AFAIK). I ran Solo2 for 4 years and lots of people had tint and no one ever batted an eye.
