BTW, on a track car, you never use your headlights unless you're doing a night enduro (in which case the stock lights aren't good enough anyway). Nor do you care about power windows (or power anything, really). And you're sure as hell not going to use your a/c. on the track!

On my track car (a BMW), I've pulled out the whole a/c system. Not only does it save a massive amount of weight right at the front of the car, but it also makes service easier (easier to get to the oil filter, etc.).

Please note that this was posted in the motorsports section...not show-n-shine. This guy is asking about modifications for the track...not the strip.

Emre,

I look at shaving weight off of the Evo like this:

10lbs. off the front = you need to take 10lbs off the rear; Even though the Evo is 60/40, it is set-up accordingly??? It isn't luck that a 60/40 car handles so aggressively - right?

Lol. No way. The Evo handles well despite it's inherent imbalance. It's not like Mitsu engineers set out to design a front-heavy car. It's a compromise.

I've been tracking cars for years. Believe me, if you could balance the car better, the Evo would be unstoppable.

The only way to meaningfully reduce weight in an EVO is carbon fiber body panels. I don't mean just hood and trunk, that won't do much. Robi's car has carbon fiber doors, and I would think carbon fiber quarter panels would help to. They are expensive and fragile. One time at Calif. Speedway on a windy day I was checking out Robi's car, and I left a door open as I looked inside. He said, "be careful, the wind will blow that door right off." I don't think he was kidding. The EVO is inherently a heavy car, with the awd system and a tub that weighs 700 lbs. Compare that to the Elise, it's tub weighs only 150 lbs. An EVO is built like a tank. Consider adding horsepower instead of trying to shed lots of weight.

how much weight do you think the stock headunit along with all speakers weigh? I was actually considering removing mine because I never even listen to it... Besides with exhaust being loud as **** I can't hear anything!

i just got my ac removed and i took of my front beam.. total weight savings was like 51 lbs!!! im kinda pissed i wish it was more.. but the benefits will be pretty decent. all the weight was on the very front of the car... and without the condenser for the ac, i will get much better cooling for the radiator, not to mention the fact that the ac pulley is completely gone. i think im goin to try to take off the rear wiper system and the electronics for it.. more to come.

this may be a dumb question, but is there anyway to get rid of a sun roof other than buying an mr roof?

Uuuhhh, don't get a sunroof in the first place.

Re: 51 lb. weight reduction for a/c and beam. That's a nice reduction. The only single component you can remove to save that much weight is to find a driver who weighs 52 lbs. less than you do. Or if you are fat, lose 52 lbs. Don't complain, that's a good result.

Im sure you can remove the assembly and all its parts then have a panel welded in place (and the roof painted). Ive seen it done on BMW's and I assume the Evo is no different. It's all about how far you're willing to go to shed a few pounds.

I have done all the weight removal so far such as a/c , seatbelts, suspension , wheels and tires, no moonroof ( you can order a stock roof skin without the moonroof for around $350-$400 or the aluminum MR /RS skin for around $800ish and cut out the old one and weld that in), nothing in the trunk, all sound deadener removed and carpet padding and airbag (replaced with sparco wheel with quick release). I also swapped the recaro seats for sparcos right now but my Bride Vios super low max seats should be here soon.

You can't weld in a MR roof panel. It's Aluminum, the Body is steel. Mitsubishi rivits it in with a special seal. It's actually pretty trick, so don't think you can just put an MR roof on a standard Evo and not have it leak.

You can weld in panel, that's what all the race shops do to cars with sun roofs.
