Tracquest?

Hey hpde gurus,

I'm looking for some feedback on Tracquest de events from anyone that has gone to one. There is one coming up in my area, and while I'm considering it last minute, I'm intersted in going. I have very limited open track experience, but they claim to offer a slow run group for noobies. Thoughts?

Every Traquest event that I have been to or heard of has been a class act.

Carl Buckland is a great DE teacher aswell, I know he does Traquest alot, or atleast used to.

dont hesitate to ask for help and get teacher in with you.

You'll have a blast.

Todd Serota recently sold Trackquest to Chin Motorsports, so the jury
is out - will Chin continue the tradition of "tons-of-seat-time". They have
assured us they will, but, caveat emptor.

That said, there are some positives and negatives.

The good:

You pick the run group you'd like to run in.

Three run groups: red (fast), blue(medium), and yellow(slow)
The red group has open passing everywhere without signal - so *watch out*.
Blue has permission passing everywhere, and open passing on the straights.
Yellow has permission passing only on the straights - just like a regular DE.

Whatever run group you pick, there is the option after the first morning to run
with the group above you or below you - in their session, with their rules.
Say I'm in blue. I can elect to also run in red, and yellow too - effectively forever

The food is catered - although not caviar, close. Kinda funny -
rustic Mid-OH honda pavilion with gourmet menus.

The bad:

Expensive (but IMHO worth it)

Instuctors car hop. You have the option of having an instructor (if you can find
one - they're usually all out on the track!) whenever you want. There are no
assignments.

Bring brake pads, tires, gas, in plentyful quantities - you will wear thing out
like there's no tomorrow (and there is - sunday!) you will never be so tired in
all your track time... You will have so much time to work on things - perfecting
your line, picking the perfect braking and shift points... You will learn so much
more because you have the freedom to work on them more intently.

If it rains...

If you go to the Mid-OH - say hello to me...

I agree with just about everything Deetz says. I have run many HPDE events, but only one with Tracquest, at Thunderhill Raceway on NorCal last August. It was a great event with tons of track time, lots of great cars and drivers, good food, instruction and just lots of fun. After the first morning of the 2 day event, Todd allowed drivers to move up one or down one run group, which meant my group (Intermediate) could run in all 3 groups if we wanted.

Todd sold Tracquest West to Northern Calif. Racing Club which is a good organization, and he remains involved at least for the next couple of events. Hope it stays the same.

It is expensive (hope that changes).

Thanks for the info guys! I went ahead and registered today. I am so excited! I have an appt. next week for pads, alignment, fresh rubber, and a new helmet. I am seriously excited/nervous/anxious to turn some laps at Barbers.

Dont sweat it.. just take it easy and find the line, slowly but surely... dont worry about other drivers, they are irrelevant to you at this point (unless you are passing/pointing them).

dont worry about your car either (other than basics).. just focus on you.

Ask for instructor. Listen to him/her.

you'll be fine, I promise
