Also, how fast did Leh get in his STi? Do you know what suspension goodies he has on his car? He was very fast when it was pretty much stock at Roebling last January. I had the silver Evo there. Me and you talked quite some time.

I have never run the hoosiers on the evo. The only tires I have run are the stock advans and a set of avs sports. The times with the avs sports are high 23's low 24's without the new front lsd. I ran a few laps with the lsd a couple of weeks ago and it definately felt better on corner exit but I never really pushed for setting a good lap time. I would guess the hoosiers to be worth 2-3 seconds but dont know for sure.

I think Leh ran low 23's with the car basically stock, and mid 22's with the suspension and high 21's with dunlop R compound. Not 100% sure on the times for him though. The STI with its front lsd has hardly no power on understeer compared to the 03 evo.

modified: the avon's suck on a heavy car. My friend Bob runs them on his turbocharged Miata and absolutely loves them.

So in this whole discussion of R compounds, where do the stock Advans (A046) fit in? I am planning on doing HPDE only on the stockers this year (been picking them up used). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The stock Advans do OK out there. There wear pretty well, but once they get hot they get greasy and go down hill pretty fast from there. For the price you might as well be buying the RA1's.

But if this is your first year doing HPDE, the stockers will be fine. I've been using them for 2 years. If you already have them, stick with them.

For those of you who use RA-1s, how many drive on them daily? How many track weekends/street miles do you get from the tires?

Ludikraut, the biggest difference will be sheer grip at the limit, the RA-1s stick a whole lot more, on the stockers you will get them over heated much quicker than say a R comp, but you will also be able to feel the loss of traction coming a lot sooner on the yoks than on some race rubber. Evotino, I got about 9k miles out of them, combined 2 HPDE's, 4 Autocrosses, and a lot of spirited street driving...

9k miles is outstanding for a R compound with all those events! What run group are you in for the HPDEs?

I'd just like to say thanks for this thread guys. I've been searching for days for a thread like this. I'm still a little confused about all the different sizes (some guys say run 255's, some say run 235s).

However it does give me a great deal of direction, particularly tswifts posts

run 255... wider is best, not better, best. until you get to 305... don't sweat wider. and also run the correct profile which is 255 40 on a 17 and 35 for an 18. if you wanna run a tire that doesn't come in 18 35 255 then run a 265 35 18 and then roll or shave your rears.

Ok, I finally tried R compounds at the track and they were awesome. I used 235/40 R17 RA-1s. Highly recommended.

So, how do the AO48's compare to the Pilot Sport Cups and RA-1's? Beyond that, I'm curious why these tires aren't even discussed in this thread?!?!
