ESP/BSP AutoX Setup n Some Track Days
ESP/BSP AutoX Setup n Some Track Days
I'm looking into buying some parts to run in the BSP class for the 2006 season I basically have a stripped down Evo IX. I used to have a miata running in CSP but I really have no real knowledge mechanically of the Evo and I was wondering:
1) what is a good front rear/trunk strut brace for the class and for occasional track days?
2) what are some good f/r sway bars and at what settings?
3) what type of coilovers work well with the class setup and settings?
4) what type of power mods are legal for the class and proposed products/brands?
5) wheels, tires, alignment/camber etc settings?
Any former ESPers or going to be BSPers and track people please feel free to chime in, I attend at least 15-20 autocross events a season and about 3-4 trackdays. I typically want to know what works, what doesn't work etc. My plan is suspension first... power last........Thanks!

Are we allowed into BSP this year or something? I thought it was only AS, ESP, and SM.
For ESP, you can't really have much in terms of power mods. Just a cat-back and BOV. No tuning device (or flash), no boost control, nothing forward of the cat-back, no cams or anything like that. I'm not even sure how much of that suspension stuff is allowed. I know none of it is allowed in AS, but ESP doesn't allow much more.

The EVO has been bumped into BSP from ESP, because it dominated in ESP ....
The EVO is allowed in the following classes:
1. AS (A Stock)
2. STU (street touring unlimited)
3. BSP (B street prepared)
4. SM (Street Modified)
Everything that is allowed in a lower class is allowed in a higher class + more ...
Warrtalon: what mods you have described are for AS only ...
Power mods that are legal for BSP are what is allowed in STU + more:
1. Turbo back exhaust with cat (not 5 inches away from stock cat location).
2. Headers
3. Hoses
4. Intake
5. Intercooler
6. Fuel injectors
7. Fuel pump
8. Boost control is finally being allowed in SP category in 2006
9. Nothing inside the engine can be touched ....
There are more but I am not concerned with the SP classes ...
You can download the Solo handbook from
www.scca.org/Solo/Index.asp?IdS=003D84-DD12F70&x=050|070&~=
For suspension, it seems like the EVO that took 1st place in this years SOLO2 used Ohlins coilovers ... Alot of EVO track racers use the Ohlins and love them ....
Alignment you will want to play around with, start with the following and adjust as you see fit:
1. 3 deg -ve camber in the front
2. 1.5 deg -ve camber in the rear
3. 0 toe front and rear
4. Max castor setting the camber plates allow ...
For tires you will want some kind of R-compound tires in the SP class for eg: Kumho Victoracer, Kumho V710, Hoosier A3S05 ... etc
Wheels of any diameter, width or offset are permitted. Wheel spacer are also permitted.

Excellent, then I will be able to do BSP next year. I didn't want to do SM, because I am not spending that much money to not even be competitive, and I didn't want to do AS due to having to constantly remove parts.
ESP didn't allow that much last year, did it? I was told I had to remove my MBC and S-AFC while only using a cat-back vice TBE.

Cylinders may be rebored to .0472 in. over standard bore and the appropriate standard oversize piston may be substituted. Cast or forged, non-stock pistons of the same dimensions and configuration as original equipment pistons may be used. Additionally the replacement pistons must be of the same weight or greater as the original equipment pistons. The .0472 in. limit is absolute, no additional tolerance is permitted to accommodate wear. This allowance does not permit alternative ring configurations. (3/2002)
Rotating and reciprocating parts may be balanced but not lightened.
Intake and exhaust ports and manifold openings may be matched provided no change is made more than one inch from the port/manifold interface. Material may be removed to facilitate port matching, but no material may be added. (3/2002)

Seriously tho, the class for the EVO seems to be STU ... and you don't need R-compound tires to compete in it ... I don't know why, but despite what I keep reading over and over again, I feel a well preped AS EVO can beat an AS preped S2K ...

I'm gonna have to disagree. I think that on a national level, the S2k is where it's at....and the results speak for themselves in AS over the last 2 years. In contrast, on a local level, Evo drivers often have the upper hand.... local events are more about the driver, anyway.
SP/ Street Prepared also allows the elimination of Cats. You can also do Update/backdate. Which means if you have an 03, you can upgrade to the 05 front diff.
Or like what a lot of Domestic guys do, take a stripped down V-6 version and throw in the V-8. Read the rule book, there is ALOT you can do in SP.
