Roll Cages

Before I start the thread, I have one comment:

-Please no mention of Cusco, Safety21, etc. blah blah hinged roll cages. You do not have a roll cage, you have a bunch of bars that add weight and some holes in your floor pan.

Now that we have that out of the way, for you big time road racing guys, who/what company are you using for roll cages? Are you all getting custom jobs or ordering from a place like Safety Devices or Custom Cages UK?

I am getting ready for club racing next year and right now my options seem to be:

1) Autopower Weld-in Cage
2) Custom Cages Cage
3) Safety Devices Cage
4) Custom job

Can anyone comment on any other options I might have other than the above?
About how much did you spend for the cage and install?

Any insight would help, thanks. And before some of you freak out, this is a track only car.

I was quoted $800 for a custom rollBAR from a local guy. If I were to turn the car into to a track only car, I would take it to him for a cage. Something about a cage custom fitted to my car would make me sleep better at night.

Oh, I'm not a big time road racing guy, but I play one on TV.

Look to pay around $3-$4k for a full cage done by someone who knows what they are doing.

MIne was $2500 from a local guy. Ask around, you'll be surprized how many qualified welders there are in your area

Remember that just because someone is a qualified welder, that does not make them a good cage builder. I have seen many cages that had nice welds, but were bad from a design point of view. I would go with an experienced cage builder, instead of an experienced welder alone.

As far as what off the shelf cage would be good, I don't think I have seen any that would be up to my standards without modification. Many of the cages have A-pillar bars that run in front of the dash, and honestly I wouldnt want to drive in any car with a setup like that. Preferably I'd like a cage that runs through the dash as close to the pillar as possible. Also would prefer nascar door bars on the driver side for ease of entry.

I am not sure if OMP makes a cage for the evo, but I do know that they make a good fitting off the shelf cage for other cars.

And in your bashing of Safety-21/ Cusco cages you are 10000% CORRECT. They are not real cages and are more like "monkey bars" in that they are all show. Most of them don't even have a cross bar or harness bar. Most of them say "not for competition use" because in a roll they would be too weak. So yes people should stay away from these "aesthetic cages" if they want to do any competition.

But let me say this again like my other thread....if you plan on driving this car on the street at all, then DO NOT GET A CAGE (more than 4pt.). Cages are designed for helmet use ONLY. They are not safe to drive around on the street, so your car should be towed or trailored. Yes I know some people drive around with cages on the street and they are ignoring their own safety. So if you are considering a full cage, then you should also know that your car is now a dedicated trailored race car and not at all capable of street duty.

I have a tough time reading your posts without sighing and saying "oh this guy again"

Do you have an SCCA cage in your car or is this just another opportunity to get a comment or two in?

I'll be probably the first to tell you that the majority of cages used in professional race cars are "off the shelf" VT Sportscar uses "off the shelf" cages for group N as well as open class cars and they are considered to be one of the foremost constructors in the country.

Custom Cages UK
Sparco
OMP
Safety Devices

Those companies all sell FIA cages that are legal and homologated, prebent and ready to install. Most of the cages require shortening and fitting but they are pre cut, bent and notched to meet specification. In fact, if you decide to alter it or add to it the homologation and approval will be nullified.

I think that Tsurara said or implied that this is not going to be a car driven on the street.

I'm looking to know if the 2007 rules require ladder bars or "Nascar" bars which after reading the CGM it looks like the answer is no.

These are "off the shelf"

...but with the pass through the firewall makes it not legal for SCCA.
