Which model is best to track (road-race)?
Mine doesn't. Its steel -- try a magnet and see.
How do people (not you RichardEVO, you know your car as well as the rest of us) keep passing so much misinformation about the RS. Even yesterday I had people come up to me saying that my car didn't really have A/C. I had to ****ing turn it ON to prove that it actually works.

The Evo VIII. Put in an RS lsd. Do the typical weight reduction. Upgrade to something like an FP Green with the other typical bolt ons. The RS would be a good choice but I also like to have the abs. You won't realize how much you like it until you drive an Evo on the track that doesn't have it.

Remember the touted "Urban Jungle Package" that was going to be on the '04 RS? There never was any such thing.
Every RS that came to the U.S.A. had A/C.
It would also depend on what sanctioning organization you plan to run the evo in. Some like NASA TT / PT change base classing based upon the model year.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII ('04-'05)(AWD) TTC**
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII MR ('05)(AWD) TTB
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX ('06)(AWD) TTB
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo MR ('06)(AWD) TTB*
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo RS ('06)(AWD) TTB
NASA 07 rules p15
(quick explanation, 19 bumps to next lettered class, * = 7 pts, ** = 14pts) Pretty much any competative evo will run in TTB but later models may have a harder time since they allow for less modifications. Of course the sky is the limit as far as what class the car eventually lands in so the starting point matters less as the car goes from stock to insane.
I think SCCA Touring classes doesn't care but its always a good idea to check the rules before going into any form of road racing.
With that said I still voted for the RS since it has all of the performance benefits and costs the least.

Back on topic. One thing the 2004 RS has going for it is that it is the lightest US evo available. Mine is only 3100 with me in it!
EDIT: of course i've dropped weight with mods. Stock it was about 3080 lbs with an empty tank.
