Spares to bring to Targa Newfoundland?

For those who have been following my blog, you already know about my entry in this year's Targa Newfoundland Rally. We'll, I'm only two months away from having to get the car on a transporter for the long haul across North America, and so have to start preparing a crate or two with spare parts to bring to the event.

I can't carry everything plus the kitchen sink, as anything that comes with really needs to fit into the car in one of two packing crates. I want to identify those things that are common failure items so that I don't get caught out with some minor failure during the rally and not be able to complete the week.

So, for you racers out there, what have you broken on your car? Consumables like brakes and fluids are a given. I know bearings are a common failure item, as are certain bushings, so both will be coming with me. But what else?

Any advice would be appreciated. I'll summarize my full spares list and include it in my blog.

Do you have room in your parts crate for my jealousy?

I'm sure it will fit in the car with the rest of my emotional baggage.

Pads, Keeper pins for pads. A spare blow-off.

Some safety wire for those disintigrating exhaust pieces. May wanna think about things like an extra fuel pump, Defiantly extra clamps for IC pipe issues. Maybe some extra screw in's for the calipers (bleeder pieces). Maybe a spare exhaust manifold, but gaskets at least, all the exhaust side gaskets.

thats the "rares" that i'd think of. Best of luck!

I'm not going to mention specifics but consider what would get damaged in a shunt. An intercooler, for example.

I think the Evo will be a great Targa car - especially if it rains

As a consideration -- I have heard that a number of guys have had problems with bad gas up there. Be careful if you are in a high state of tune.

I almost ran this in my 7 2 years ago. Have fun

** Make sure your ride height is reasonable. It can get very bumpy!

Small items:
"L" Shaped coolant tube to the turbo (expands and blows out).
Extra rear sway bar bracket.
Spare battery + charger
Rear camber and toe bolts and nuts.
Front camber bolt.
Extra lug nuts and studs, impact socket.
Extra exhaust hanger or way to fix a broken one.
Tire valve.
CV boot.

Front diff?

All things I've seen fail on race Evos.

I'd definitely bring a spare t-case or two. That seems to be the most fragile part of our driveline.

If I have a shunt it would probably require more than what I can carry -- that said, I plan to bring a spare intercooler and radiator just in case.

This is a nice, comprehensive checklist of everything to carry in your race trailer. Thanks.

The gas is actually the same as what we get here in California -- basically really crappy 91 octane. I've already tuned the motor to that, and have also added a little bit more fuel at high revs to protect the motor.

As for ride height, I'm pretty darn close to stock ride height at this point! You definitely need some extra ride height for the Newfoundland roads, but do need to lower the car a bit to maximize performance on the tighter, smoother roads.

I will be. I'll update the blog every night (assuming the car doesn't break and I'm up all night fixing it, or course ;-) and will try to upload pics and video at the same time.
