I wonder why they do that. I understand the 140 rating for street, but Modified not allowing the MOST popular tires in all the land just seems wierd.

Sorry, Robevo, I didn't know those two were just below the cutoff for Modified class - that really makes no sense. The cutoff should be slicks vs no slicks between Modified and Unlimited.
They do it because the only real difference between Street, Modified, and Unlimited classes is the tires. Street = street tires (140 tread rating or higher). Modified = R-compounds (with some tread like RA-1 or NT-01, usually 100 tread rating). Unlimited = DOT "Slicks" (really r-compounds with slick appearance like V710 and R6/A6, and less than 50 tread rating).

Most of the other class restrictions don't really mean that much.

...except in the SCCA autocross classes where Street Modified is a popular class for the Evo.

Yes i understand, but he was asking about the Redline Time Attack. For better reference read response #7.

i will go to club racing events . Lime Rock and Watkins Glenn , and if the Jersey track will be open this year then there too.
But i want to go the RTA, in VIR. with my 3 other evo friends too.
I hope we can make it.so most of the time i can run on slick on the track. I need the tires /140 / only for one event in this year. Plus when we go for car shows etc. So i still need some street tires.

If the BFG R1 can be run in Modified that would seem to make it a pretty easy choice.

I would think that one would go with the V710 and the R6. So what class gets to run real race slicks?

Isnt the new R1 said to be faster than ane v710's and R6's? If so, that is wierd they allow that tire in mod class.

Yeah, none of it makes sense with the tire cutoffs in Modified. Why the R1 but not tires that are equal (or perhaps even inferior)? And why cut those off when they are EXTREMELY COMMON in this racing world with time trials...

UTQG tread wear rating limit
Street: 140+
Modified: 50+

The Unlimited class is limited to DOT legal tires. That means they cant use non-DOT race slicks.

It makes sense if BFG is a sponsor.

Has anyone hear run the BFG R1? My understanding is that they are much less sticky than something like a V710 or Hoosier. I know they last much longer.

I've heard they're comparable to the R6. The A6 and V710 both have softer compounds.
