2008 Formula1 discussion
I just don't see the ROI for the teams to continue participating in this sport, especially those that aren't auto manufacturers. It's just a money pit with the winner getting bragging rights. The impacts the sales on the sale products and services may be minimum at best since you are dealing with a niche' audience ...
name one auto sport that isn't like that? NO ONE races cars to make money. teams always have to seek outside help (i.e. sponsors) to help cover the costs. it is afterall a sport, or entertainment. it is not profitable to race because there is no profit. the reason there is so much money in higher levels of racing is because of the advertising to the audience. thats why sponsors pay the millions to get their logo on lewis' helmet so that 1 billion people can see him win a race and the entire world will know that vodafone sponsors him. manufacturers can add addition tens/hundreds of millions to the team as advertising, research and development for their street cars, and in general making their name recognized around the world (advertising).
if racing were profitable, then everyone with a car would be racing.
Loved the sound. I sat in stand H in '02 and '04 time, best section, right in front of turn one. The starts were cool, all you could see was a wall of haze before the sound gets to you. But after that I was basically watching TV (giant display in the grass by turn 6) because I could only see 1/3 of the track.
'03 I think I was somewhere in the straight, ****ty seats, so we just walked around wherever we could and ended up watching most of it from the grass in turn 8. '04 was great, my friend and I were surrounded by pompous Ferrari *******s, so we started rooting for Minardi, who actually finished a car in 8th.
And for the record, the start of a super-speedway NASCAR race is way cooler. 43 cars create an amazing wall of air and noise.
I did Indy in '02, '03, and '04. Turned down free '05 tickets and was glad I didn't go (sitting in 95° + sun and watching 6 cars "race").

I've only seen NASCAR at Dover, not nearly the same but still a great sound non the less. I would love to go to Dega one time and stay in the in-field, I hear it's absolutely f***ing crazy.
Yeah, qualifying for '03 was cool. One of the McLaren cars went off at turn 8 right in front of us and broke the front wing off, we were yelling at the corner worker to give us the wing. Didn't happen.
I've been to Michigan and Bristol for NASCAR races. Bristol is fun, especially if you enjoy partying with rednecks.
Michigan tends to be uneventful because the track is wide and smooth. But the start is amazing, wait 'til the cars are about 500' away and stick your face by the fence.
